(Minghui.org) Ms. Zhong Weiling was incapacitated and suffered from memory loss, confusion, incontinence, and dizziness when she was released on April 15, 2022, after serving ten months for practicing Falun Gong, a spirtitaul discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party since July 1999.

Two years have since passed, and Ms. Zhong is now 70. Her memory only improved a bit but she is unable to care for herself.

The damage to Ms. Zhong’s health was a result of the abuse she suffered while in detention. The retired elementary school teacher from Lianyungang City, Jiangsu Province was arrested on June 2, 2020 after being reported for talking to people about Falun Gong. She was released and placed under house arrest three days later and taken back into custody on June 16, 2021 after she was sentenced to ten months.

Ms. Zhong served half of her term at the Lianyungang City Detention Center (June 2020 – December 2021) and the remainder at the Jiangsu Province Women’s Prison (December 2021 – April 2022) in Zhenjiang City.

With injuries to her legs and loss of teeth from being tortured during her previous detentions in the early years of the persecution, Ms. Zhong had a difficult time getting anything to eat due to the extremely limited resources and poor conditions in the detention center. She quickly lost weight and was dizzy from lack of food.

After she was transferred to the Jiangsu Province Women’s Prison, Ms. Zhong held two hunger strikes to protest the persecution. In their attempt to make her renounce Falun Gong, the guards forced her to sit on a tiger bench all day long and didn’t allow her to move. She was forced to sit on a small stool motionless during the last month of her term. The inmates in the cell were encouraged to kick her. They forced her to sleep on the floor. She wasn’t allowed to eat vegetables or meat but could only drink the broth used to boil the food. Meanwhile, the guards also added unknown drugs to her food.

A guard claimed, “I don’t believe over ten people can’t straighten out an old woman.” She also ordered the inmates to “beat her to death.”

As a result of regular beatings, Ms. Zhong was covered in bruises and injuries. She also suffered persistent dizziness, incontinence, and memory loss. She appeared confused at times and was unable to care for herself. When she was released on April 15, 2022, she was emaciated and incapacitated.

Ms. Zhong’s latest imprisonment was preceded by many more arrests for her faith. See the related reports for details of her latest prison sentence and earlier persecution.
