[Daqing] Authorities Secretly Cremate Practitioner Wang Bin
5pm on November 27th, the family of Wang Bin was suddenly
notified that Wang's body would be cremated that evening. The van carrying
his body left the morgue at midnight of November 28th and arrived
at the cremation site around 1am. His body was cremated at 2am, and the
process was completed by dawn. The local police and plainclothes agents
watched the process closely.
According to insiders, the reason why the body was cremated in such a
secretive manner was that the police had received orders from the higher-ups
that "Wang Bin's body needs to be cremated quickly." Normally
bodies are cremated between 4am and 6am, and no one knows the motive behind
this midnight cremation.
[Lanzhou, Gansu (province)] Professor Guo Shoujun Under Police Detention
Over Ten Months
Dr. Guo Shoujun, in his 30's, was a professor at the Northwest Teacher's
College in Gansu Province.
He was arrested for writing the opening remarks of the 1999 Lanzhou
Experience Sharing Conference and going to Beijing in February to hold up
the banner; "Falun Gong is Good." He has been held at the North
Orchard Detention Center in the city of Lanzhou, where he was forced to
perform intensive manual labor, for more than ten months now.
The conditions at the detention center are extremely severe. In the
summer, every inmate has to meet a quota of producing between 1.5 kg to 2 kg
(3.3 4.4 lb) of melon seeds. (Translator's note: the procedure is to put
each shell into one's mouth and use the side of one's teeth to open up a
small crack on the shell, then take it out of one's mouth, and use one's
fingers to pick out the inner seed). The work starts at 7am in the morning.
The inmates have to perform the work in a squatting position for close to
five hours. After lunch, they have to resume the work and meet the quota, or
they are not allowed to go to sleep. The fingers of many inmates are bloody,
and the fingernails of some have been peeled away, yet they still are forced
to work. Some practitioners in their 60's are forced to meet the same quota
as everyone else, and often have to endure physical and verbal abuse from
fellow inmates.
In the winter, each inmate has to pick out the best-quality seeds from
3.5 kg (7.7 lb) of melon seeds everyday. The inmates are forced to work form
7am to 5pm in a squatting position outside, where the temperature often
falls below -15C (0 F). Anyone who could not meet the quota is beaten or
punished. Many inmates suffer from cold sores in the winter. The death rate
among inmates here is quite high.
Local practitioners are routinely locked up here for several additional
months, even after their terms are up. Dr. Guo Shoujun has been forced to
remain here for more than 10 months now, during which time his family has
not been allowed to visit him even once. Dr. Guo was an outstanding
researcher and teacher at his university. He was the winner of many research
grants from the Gansu Province Young Researcher's Fund, and was in charge of
a number of medical and pharmaceutical research projects under the Ministry
of Technology. He was also a key researcher at the New Technology
Development Project at the university.
Lately the government has placed a lot of emphasis on the development of
the western region of China. As such a talented and prominent scientist, Dr.
Guo should have been contributing to this effort. Because of his faith in
Falun Gong, he has been illegally detained for so long and forced to pick
out melon seeds everyday. Recently he has received a so-called trial notice
from the local court. Supposedly, his case will be tried in open court soon.
[Shenzhen, Guangdong (province)] Former "Top Ten Police
Officer" Fired
Li Wei, around 35 years old, a police officer at the Shenzhen Airport. He
was fired from his job and his home was ransacked, because he insisted on
practicing Falun Gong. He was arrested when he went to Beijing to tell
people about Falun Gong sometime during the first half of this year. He was
able to get away, but his current whereabouts are unknown.
In the past, he had made large anonymous donations to support the
education of poor children in the desolate mountain areas. The local
newspaper wrote a special report on him, and he was once named as one of the
"Top Ten Young People" in the field of public security.
Practitioner Zhang Yuhong was forced to leave her home with her
6-month-old baby. Her husband was sentenced to one year in prison for going
to Beijing to make an appeal on behalf of Falun Gong. He has since been
released but remains under close police supervision at home.
Practitioners Yao Dan, Liu Xuefei, Zhuang Wenshu, and Zhao Haining have
been arrested for distributing Falun Gong truth-clarifying material. Their
families have not been allowed to visit them.
[Gansu (province)] The truth about Falun Gong awakens people
One practitioner went to visit his relatives in the Longnan area of Gansu
Province. He used the time to distribute several hundred copies of Falun
Gong material to his friends and family members. The local police were
placed on high alert, thinking that a large number of practitioners had
arrived, but the practitioner was able to return home safely
Practitioners at a certain city distributed Falun Gong flyers to the
local army station and the local middle school. After reading the flyers,
Falun Gong became a popular topic of discussion among the local people. On
top of admiring the courage of practitioners and being sympathetic toward
them, some local people began to openly denounce the evil deeds of Jiang
Zemin.
[Jiamusi (city)] Xiangyan Police Station Sends Large Number of
Practitioners to Labor Camps
The police at the Xiangyan Police Station in Jiamusi persecute Falun Gong
practitioners in an especially vicious manner. They have arrested more
practitioners than any other police station in the city. The deeds of Cui
Rongli, a platoon leader, have been especially vile. He has punished
practitioners ranging from elderly people in there 60's to young girls in
their teens. He abused his power, forcing the families of practitioners to
pay large fines. He ordered his goons to ransack the homes of practitioners
and to arrest practitioners without cause.
Some practitioners were thrown into the detention center without cause,
and they were only released after their families paid fines of several
thousand Yuan (several months of an average salary) and signed pledges on
their behalves. Some practitioners' homes were repeatedly ransacked when
nobody was home, and when they returned, they would find that their
valuables such as jewelry have vanished. After the home of practitioner Kang
Aimin was ransacked, Cui Rongli ordered his goons to throw her into the
detention center, claiming that her attitude was bad, and asked to sentence
her to a 2-year term at the labor camps. Practitioners Chen Naizhong and
Zheng Libin were arrested for attending a large experience sharing
conference in Wangfengshan, where several hundred practitioners attended.
They each held a hunger strike for several days and were on the verge of
death. His family brought Chen Naizhong back home, where he remained for
only a few days, before the police arrested him again and sent him directly
to the labor camps. Zheng Libin had no family members around, and the
Xiangyan Police Station refused to let anyone else take him home. He was
also sent to a labor station directly several days later, where he was able
to escape later. Professor Huang Min was arrested and sentenced to one year
at the labor camps for refusing to comply with the punishment given by the
university for going to Beijing to appeal to Falun Gong. Practitioner Zhang
Linde, an old lady in her 60's, has been thrown into the local detention
center five times, and she has since been sentenced to three years at the
labor camps.
