The following article by Liang Xin appeared on the January 19th, 2001 issue of Renmin Bao (People's Newspaper). In the evening of December 31st, Jiang Zemin was rushed to the hospital, suffering from a heart attack. On January 2nd, after receiving a request from the CPC (Communist Party of China) Central Politburo, the CPC Central Secretary's office drafted a proposal containing two plans that would gradually clear the name of Falun Gong. The proposal was submitted to the Standing Committee of the CPC Politburo on January 7th. The Politburo members are planning to hold a discussion on the matter during its annual meeting scheduled to take place at the end of the month. The proposal includes plans to inform the CPC organization at each level of the country that the order (to clear the name of Falun Gong) will be coming and asking certain responsible parties to step aside or submit their resignations. Before that, the government has issued clear orders to ban all the writings by He Zuoxiu, the fake scientist and Jiang Zemin's eager follower who wrote many articles to slander Falun Gong and was responsible for igniting the April 25th Event. (Translator's notes: for a full explanation of the April 25th Event, please see "Information on the Situation in China" under http://www.falundafa.org/eng/faq.htm). What does the banning of his writings imply? January 24th is the Chinese New Year's Day. The legislative proposal that is intended to clear the name of Falun Gong will be discussed at the CPC Central Politburo meeting at the end of the month, which means that the plan is to clear the name of Falun Gong after the Chinese New Year. On January 16th, the fellows of the Chinese Academy of Science held a Chinese New Year team party at the Beijing's Friendship Hotel. Members of the so-called "Chinese Anti-cult Association" suddenly made an appearance at the party. They took out a prepared petition letter, and claimed that they were starting a so-called "a million-signature petition drive to fight against the cult and to protect the human rights of the Chinese citizens." Accompanied by cameramen from the government-controlled media outlets, they brought the petition letter to each person and asked him to sign it. The disgraced He Zuoxiu made a rare appearance at this meeting as well. In the recent days, similar signature petition drives have been organized in a number of Chinese institutions of higher leaning and among the highly educated intellectuals. Are the followers of Jiang Zemin planning to use the people who were deceived into signing the petition as "the voice from the people" to prevent the CPC Central Politburo from clearing the name of Falun Gong? According to many reports, Jiang Jinheng (the son of Jiang Zemin who is the vice chairman of the Chinese Academy of Science and also operates a number of lucrative business ventures by the virtue of being his father's son) has been offering advice on many political matters to his father. Last year the central government surprisingly promoted a number of young bureaucrats ahead of schedule and also sent out decrees ordering elderly bureaucrats to take early retirement. In retrospect, it appears as if the father and son team of Jiang had been setting the stage for the entrance of Jiang Jinheng into the CPC Central Politburo. People all over the world know that Jiang Zemin has been personally overseeing the persecution of Falun Gong. If the name of Falun Gong were cleared just as his life is winding down, how ridiculous would Jiang look in front of the Chinese people and on the world stage? How could his son still gain entrance to the CPC Central Politburo? Does that mean that the political careers of his followers are coming to an end as well? The truth of the matter is that the people who are afraid of clearing the name of Falun Gong are the same people who have gained the most from the persecution of Falun Gong, and who will likely lose their power afterwards. Isn't it obvious who is behind the "million-signature petition drive to fight against the xx [word slandering Dafa respectfully omitted] and protect the human rights of the Chinese citizens?"
