BBC Monitoring: Falun Gong protests against persecution by mainland
10/01/2001
[Text of report by Radio TV Hong Kong audio web site on 1 October] About 40 Falun Gong members have demonstrated outside the Central
Government's Liaison Office in Sheung Wan against what they say is the
mainland's persecution of their members. The protesters marked National
Day
by holding banners and photos and observing one minute of silence for
those
of its group detained on the mainland. The Falun Gong says one of its women followers suffered a lengthy
beating by
police before being thrown to her death from a high window. The group's
New
York-based headquarters said Yu Xiuling died on 19 September after a
fall
from the fourth story of a police station in the northeastern province
of
Liaoning. It said her husband was told that she had jumped to her
death.
