Filed at: 12:42 PM China has ordered over 30 western followers of the
banned Falun Gong
spiritual movement to leave the country after they
mounted a protest in
Tiananmen Square.
Police detained the protesters after they unfurled a
banner in English
and Chinese in the middle of the square. Those
involved are from ten
different countries including Ireland.
Brian Trought from Cork was one of those arrested.
According to a
statement from Falun Gong 22-year-old Brian Trought is
a physics student at
UCC.
The [group] was banned by the Chinese government two
years ago, and
according to human rights groups tens of thousands of
its members have been
arrested and sent to labour camps while several
hundred have died in
police custody.
