Filed at: 12:42 PM

China has ordered over 30 western followers of the banned Falun Gong spiritual movement to leave the country after they mounted a protest in Tiananmen Square.

Police detained the protesters after they unfurled a banner in English and Chinese in the middle of the square. Those involved are from ten different countries including Ireland.

Brian Trought from Cork was one of those arrested. According to a statement from Falun Gong 22-year-old Brian Trought is a physics student at UCC.

The [group] was banned by the Chinese government two years ago, and according to human rights groups tens of thousands of its members have been arrested and sent to labour camps while several hundred have died in police custody.
