Yu Junjie, male, 43: On September 8, 1999 he went to Beijing to appeal to the government to stop persecuting Falun Gong. He was arrested and sent to the Heilongjiang Liaison Office in Beijing. When the police from Shuangcheng City came to pick him up, the policemen Yu Zhanjun and Sui Guangcheng body-searched him and took away 180 Yuan (Chinese currency, the monthly salary for an average Chinese urban laborer is about 500 Yuan). He was detained for 66 days in the Shuangcheng Detention Center. His family asked for his release many times, but police refused them every time. After the family was extorted 5,000 Yuan by Wang Guodong and Zhang Shiyao from the 610 Office (a bureau specifically created by the Chinese government to persecute Falun Gong. It has absolute power over each level of administration in the Party, as well as over the political and judiciary branches), another 2,500 Yuan for so-called "travel expenses to Beijing to bring Yu Junjie back" by the town's vice mayor, 500 Yuan by Wang Jingui from the local police station and 580 Yuan by Shuangcheng Detention Center, he was finally released. On January 18, 2001, police from the local station broke into his home and asked if he was still practicing Falun Gong. Yu Junjie answered yes. The police immediately sent him to the Shuangcheng Detention Center and jailed him for 65 days. Wang Jinzhu from the police station along with Wang Guodong and Zhang Shiyao from the 610 Office extorted 1,000 Yuan from him before releasing him. On May 16, 2001, he was arrested by the local government on the pretext of "illegally gathering," while he was talking with other Falun Gong practitioners. Vice mayor Sun Jihua and policeman Li Heji beat him up and left him unconscious for a long time in the cell. He was unable to eat anything for several days. He was detained for 60 days. The local government paid some thugs to monitor and follow him.

Zhao Dongyan, female, 29: In November 1999, she went to Beijing to appeal to the government to stop persecuting Falun Gong. She was arrested, sent back, then detained in Shuangcheng's 2nd Detention Center. Practitioners were not allowed to read Falun Gong books or practice Falun Gong, and were forced to sit on wooden benches for a long time. She and other practitioners were locked up in an empty house in the backyard of the Center. Every one was detained in separate rooms. The guards stayed in the big living room. There were no daily necessities permitted, and for eleven days they were denied bathing facilities. Later she was sent to the cell in the front yard. The food offered was black and mildewed corn gruel with fish bones or chicken bones in it. 3,000 Yuan was extorted from her by Zhang Guofu from Shuangcheng's 610 Office, and she was forced to pay 200 Yuan as a meal fee. After being detained for 49 days, she was released. On June 24, 2000, she went to Beijing to appeal again. She was arrested and sent back. She was handcuffed together with another practitioner, which made moving very awkward. During more than 2 months of being detained in the Shuangcheng Detention Center, 3,000 Yuan was extorted from her by Zhang Wanliang from Youlian Village and 200 Yuan as a meal fee by the detention center before she was released. The local police station and village officials searched her home and took away all the construction materials and tools (estimated at 7,000 Yuan) which her family had prepared to build a house. On January 1, 2000, she was arrested while distributing Falun Gong flyers in Qiqihar City, and detained in Qiqihar's 1st Detention Center. Police tortured and beat her up in order to force her to give them her name and address, but she didn't. She was locked up on a iron chair for three days without food or water. The police put shackles on her twice. Once she was sent to the Longsha Police Patrol Section in Qiqihar City where she was brutally tortured. The police broke a broom handle while beating her. They also used rubber hoses to beat her; especially the section chief beat her up fiercely. Her face was black and blue, her lips swelled up, and her mouth was bleeding. Shackles were put on her, she was forced to wear a heavy helmet, and her mouth was tightly sealed by a towel. After half an hour, when the police stopped torturing her, her hands turned purple-black and had lost all feeling. On the 26th of the last month in the Chinese lunar calendar (in Jan. 2001), police poured cold water on her and another practitioner, opened the window to freeze them, forced them to sit on a brick floor, and beat and kicked them. She was recognized by someone and sent back to the Shuangcheng Detention Center. She was released after going on a seven day hunger strike, and is now homeless.

Wen Yonghua, male, 37: On November 4, 1999, he was illegally arrested by Handian Police Station. The police interrogated him by torturing him for an entire night, then sent him to the Shuangcheng Detention Center the next day and detained him for one month. Before he was released, Zhang Shiyao from the 610 Office forced him to pay 4,500 Yuan. On June 20, 2000, he went to Beijing to appeal to the government to stop persecuting Falun Gong. He was arrested on Tiananmen Square and jailed in Yanqing Detention Center for seven days, then sent back to Beijing before he was escorted back to his hometown. He was detained in the Shuangcheng Detention Center for 86 days, and had 500 Yuan extorted from him by Wang Hongsheng and Liu Yingwu. The Center transferred 750 Yuan out of his bank account.

Dong Guozhong, male, 48: In July 2000, he went to Beijing to appeal to the government to stop persecuting Falun Gong. After the village officers heard this, they stole his cow, and forced his wife to either pay 2,000 Yuan or they would sell the cow. His wife had to borrow money from friends and relatives to get the cow back. During the 15 days in the Shuangcheng Detention Center, he was brutally tortured. His chest was swollen. Police kicked him on his ribs with their boots on and hit his ears with their fists. His ears were swollen and he had a blood blister. His ribs were so badly wounded that he could not turn around on his back or breath freely. This is the brutality of Jiang Zeming's thugs!

Dong Yinghui, female, 22: On December 22, 2000, she went to Beijing to appeal to the government to stop persecuting Falun Gong and got arrested. She was detained in the Huairou Detention Center in Beijing. Because she refused to tell her name and address, the police threatened to throw her into male cells. She went on a hunger strike and the police used electric batons to beat her up while she was tightly handcuffed and could not dodge the blows. In Chengde County Detention Center in Chengde City, Hebei Province, she refused to tell her name and address, the policeman Meng Guixiang and the Section director, Chang threatened to send her into the cell's that held convicted murderers. She was sent back and detained in the Shuangcheng Detention Center for 50 days. The local government and Liu Yingwu from the village committee extorted 2,500 Yuan from her.

Yang Lihua, female, 31: On December 30, 2000, she went to Beijing to appeal to the government to stop persecuting Falun Gong, and was arrested at the Fengrun Train Station, which is around 100 kilometers from Beijing. She was sent back and detained in the Shuangcheng Detention Center for 100 days, leaving her two children unattended at home. Her relatives went to the detention center asking for her release, but were refused. The local government and police station forcibly took away the four-wheel tractor from her home. Without the tractor, her family could not do anything on their farm and missed the planting time, thus losing several thousand Yuan. The village head extorted 6,500 Yuan from her family before returning the tractor.

Zheng Yanxia, female, 31: In December 2000, she went to Beijing to appeal to the government to stop persecuting Falun Gong and was arrested. She was sent back and detained in the Shuangcheng Detention Center for 15 days. Zhang Yanbin (the communist party secretary from Xinli village) extorted 800 Yuan from her before she was released.

Wang Zhifen, female, 52: On September 10, 1999, she went to Beijing to appeal to the government to stop persecuting Falun Gong and was arrested by the plain-clothes police. She was sent to the Shuangcheng Liaison Office in Beijing, where the police stripped her in the lavatory and took away all her money. Her township government took her to the Shuangcheng Detention Center and detained her for 81 days. Policemen Liu Chunyang and Zhang Shiyao extorted 3,000 Yuan from her, and she was forced to pay a 670 Yuan accommodation fee. Wang Jinzhu and Zhang Dianqi from the local government extorted 2,500 Yuan from her.

Lei Minggong, male, 33: On September 5, 1999, he was detained in Shuangcheng Detention Center because he went to Beijing to appeal to the government to stop persecuting Falun Gong. He was brutally beaten in the detention center. You Guoxia from Handian town extorted money from him three times for a total of around 16,000 Yuan. Handian township government extorted another 2,500 Yuan. Shuangcheng Public Security Bureau and Yang Xu extorted money from him twice for a total of 4,000 Yuan. The police took away his 500 Yuan and the detention center forced him to pay 1,200 Yuan for meals.

Liu Quanguo, male, 43: On September 5, 1999, he went to Beijing to appeal to the government to stop persecuting Falun Gong and was arrested. He was detained in Shuangcheng Detention Center. Handian Police Station extorted 500 Yuan from him. Handian township government forced him to pay 2,500 Yuan. On November 26, 2000 he was detained by Shuangcheng Detention Center for the second time. Shuangcheng Public Security Bureau extorted 2,000 Yuan from him. He was forced to pay 500 Yuan for meals, and was tortured and beaten up during the period he was detained.

Xiong Chunqing, female, 34: On July 20, 2000, she was illegally detained in Shuangcheng's 2nd detention Center. Guards and police often beat her in the detention center and extorted 400 Yuan from her.

Zhang Xiuqin, female, 32: On July 6, 2000, she went to Beijing to appeal to the government to stop persecuting Falun Gong. She was arrested by plain-clothes police and sent back to Shuangcheng Detention Center. Zhang Shiyao the head of the detention center extorted 2,750 Yuan from her.

Jiang Minghua, female, 36: On September 9, 1999, she went to Beijing to appeal to the government to stop persecuting Falun Gong and was arrested. She was sent back to Shuangcheng Detention Center and detained for 21 days. Zhang Shiyao the head of Shuangcheng Detention Center extorted 3,000 Yuan from her. Handian township government extorted 2,500 Yuan and Handian Detention Center extorted 500 Yuan. In April 2000, she went to Beijing to appeal again and was detained in Shuangcheng Detention Center for 32 days. Because she and her family didn't have any more money, the secretary of the village often brought people to her home asking for the House Certificate and money. Police often came to search her house.
