Cultivation and The Artistry of Singing
By a practitioner in Germany
(Clearwisdom.net) (Clearwisdom.net) I am a singer by profession. I believe that music and cultivation are closely related to each other. "Truthfulness, Compassion, Forbearance" are embodied in all matters, and vocal arrangements also contain "Truthfulness, Compassion, Forbearance." A singer starts off by emphasizing the techniques of singing. As he matures, he is able to employ his improved understanding of cultivation in his singing. The higher his cultivation level, the more refined is his mind, and the more touching his song. Just like Teacher said, "I often say this: If you speak to others out of your kindheartedness, entirely without any selfishness or your own self-interest, and completely for the sake of others, your words will move others to tears." ("Lecture at the Assistant' Fa Conference in Changchun") If an artist can sing from his heart without any elements of self-interest, his song will
move people. Now I have "Truthfulness, Compassion, Forbearance" as my standard -- when I become assimilated to "Truthfulness, Compassion, Forbearance," my voice will also correspond to "Truthfulness, Compassion, Forbearance," and the songs that I sing will touch people's hearts. It is that simple.
