On September 28, 2001, the police from Shijiazhuang City Police Department Qiaoxi Branch, and Qiaoxi District Dongli Station arrested six Falun Dafa practitioners and one of their family members at a house in Kaida Residential Complex, located at 300 Gongnong Road. It is said that the arrests were under the direction of the State Security Department, who referred to the case as "number one in Hebei Province." Police from Shijiazhuang City Police Department and Qiaodong Branch were given orders to handle it directly.
After being given the "green light," police in Shijiazhuang City mobilized all units at their disposal to search for "key figures." The relatives and friends of practitioners were all followed, and their phones and cell phones monitored. At the same time, the police administered severe physical torture to the arrested practitioners, but the practitioners' righteous minds could not be moved.
Frustrated in their efforts, the police see clearly the failure of the persecution from what the practitioners outside the prison are doing. For example, when Jiang Zemin visited Shijiazhuang City, the practitioners distributed a large number of truth-clarifying flyers and hung up banners. They even sent airborne a balloon with a huge banner attached which read: "Falun Dafa is good"--right in front of Jiang Zemin's motorcade, giving him a good view. This greatly encouraged people and at the same time shocked the perpetrators.
The six practitioners who were abducted on September 28 are as follows.
- Yang Xiaojie, male, 37, a former employee of the "China Youth Daily" North China Office, was listed as wanted in October of 2000. He was severely beaten upon his arrest. After this, he was transferred to Penghou Street Police Station (where he was registered as residing.) Because he firmly resisted the illegal interrogation, he was tied to a chair in a gym for seven days and nights. Later, he was held in Shijiazhuang City No. 1 Custodial Center. It is said that he is going to be sentenced to a long prison term.
- Liu Runling, female, 37, Yang Xiaojie's wife and a former employee of Yuji Domestic Chemicals Co., was listed as wanted in October of 2000. She was also severely beaten upon her arrest. She was later transferred to Penghou Street Police Station. She is currently held in Shijiazhuang City No. 1 Custodial Center.
- Zhao Lishan, male, about 56, deputy chief editor of "Contemporary People," a magazine affiliated with the Literature Association of Hebei Province (address of the Literature Association: No.2 Shizhuang Road, Shijiazhuang City. Phone of their Party Committee Office: 86-311-7836742, the Chairman's Office: 86-311-7041864). He was registered as a resident in Dongjiao Police Station of Xinhua District. The director's office: 86-311-7043788, extension 3535. At the beginning of June 2001, he was arrested by police on Shigang Street for distributing truth-clarifying flyers. After being arrested, he sent forth righteous thoughts and escaped. However, after escaping, he could not find any place to live and became homeless. In August, he was listed as wanted. Upon being arrested again, he was beaten hard. Later, he was transferred to the Shijiazhuang City No. 2 Custodial Center and is still detained there.
- Zhang Shijun, male, 32, college graduate, used to be an employee of the Meteorology Bureau of Heibei Province. He was fired in 2000 due to his firm belief in Falun Dafa. Shortly after, he went on a hunger strike for several days to protest his unlawful incarceration. He is currently detained at Shijiazhuang City No. 2 Custodial Center. The police have never notified his family of his detention.
- Shi Yan, male, 29, lives in Dongfang Street of Qiaodong District in the town of Pingquan in Pinquan County of Chengde City, Hebei Province. He registered his residence in Qiaodong Police Station in Pingquan. In June 2000, he was listed as wanted by the Pingquan County Police Department. They sentenced him to three years in labor camp even before they captured him. They were planning to throw him in prison if they caught him, so Shi Yan left his hometown to escape being arrested. Sadly though, he could not find any other place to live and was forced to wander about. The police from Pingquan have gone twice to Shijiazhuang City and colluded with the city police department in attempts to arrest him. But with every attempt they failed. In May 2001, the police in the Politics and Security Squad captured him, but he sent forth righteous thoughts and escaped. On September 29, he went to Kaida Residential Complex for some business and was arrested by policemen who were waiting there for him. In the Dongli Police Station, they handcuffed him and hung him up by his wrists. He was sent to Jinzhou Custodial Center in Hebei Province. On October 10, he was transferred to another location. The authorities in Shijiazhuang City took Shi Yan as a "leader", so they did not allow the police in Chengde City to get involved in the interrogation. Seeing that Shi Yan would not give in under the torture and threat while held in a place in the City Botanical Garden, they secretly sentenced him to ten years in prison. He is now detained at Jizhong Prison in Tangshan City. The police of Shijiazhuang City didn't notify Shi Yan's family during the entire process.
- Lan Qizhi, female, about 36, a college graduate, former employee of the China Storage and Transportation Corporation Shijiazhuang Branch. She lives in the residential complex of the Ordnance Engineering Institute of the Army. She was fired from her work due to practicing Falun Dafa. In May 2001, her husband (employee of the Ordnance Engineering Institute) was forced to divorce her. In July of 2001, the authorities in her company colluded with the police and sent her to a brainwashing class. She sent forth righteous thoughts and escaped. She became homeless and wandered about. In August of 2001 she was listed as "wanted". She was beaten hard when she was arrested this time. There is little information about her current situation. Whether she is dead or alive is unknown.

Zhang Lingjiang, male, 39, self-employed in the garment business, is the husband of practitioner Yu Jingxia. He registered his residence in Shigang Street Police Station in Xinhua District (Office phone of the director of the police station: 86-311-7752119 Ex.3538). On September 28, he drove to Kaida Residential Complex to pick someone up and was arrested for no apparent reason. He was released two days later. On October 23, the police received information by tapping his friend's phone and arrested him when he was leaving home for some business. It is said that he went on a hunger strike. The police from the Public Security Department held him in a hotel and interrogated him for over 20 days. They extorted 2000 Yuan from his family to pay for the hotel rooms. (Translator's note: Yuan is Chinese dollar. The average monthly income of an urban worker is 500 Yuan.) On November 17, he was detained in Shijiazhuang City No. 1 Custodial Center. It is said that they are going to charge him with "printing forbidden literature."
The practitioners detained are in critical situations. We urgently call upon all the kind-hearted people to help. The perpetrators are tightly in controlling the information. According to the insider's news from the police, practitioner Shi Yan has been illegally sentenced, and they intend to sentence other practitioners as well.
