One of my colleagues brought back this news upon returning from a business trip. Around February 15, an unemployed couple, desperate because they could not make a living, decided to kill themselves and their daughter by setting themselves on fire. They decided that the father would set fire to himself at home while the mother and daughter would do the same in a square near Nanguan. Afterwards, while the mother and daughter were dousing themselves with gasoline (and drinking gasoline too as part of their suicide) at the square, they were spotted and saved by others. Meanwhile, the fire department sent people to the family's home, but the father had already burned himself to death.
Sources close to public security departments revealed that an original plan to blame this incident on Falun Gong was aborted because the mother and daughter did not die.
In the end, this colleague said, "No one can believe news reports nowadays."

In the past couple of days, the Education Center of Daqing Petroleum Administration Bureau held a signature gathering ceremony in affiliated schools to "oppose the [Chinese government's slanderous word omitted] and expose and fight Falun Gong." The education center demanded a signature from each employee of each work unit. Refusal would result in dismissal from public duty or even "re-education" through forced labor. All students and teachers were mobilized, and it was stipulated that every student had to sign because higher authorities had given the order.
A Grade Two elementary school pupil in the Babai school district of Daqing City refused to sign. The school administrators notified the local police sub-station, which sent police to the parents' work units to take them away by force (both parents are cultivating Falun Gong). The police also conducted an illegal search of their home. At present, the father is illegally detained in Honggang Detention Center, and the mother is illegally held in Dongfeng Detention Center.
A leader of a work unit in Daqing City said, "The signature gathering is being carried out at work places. Everyone has to sign, and it won't do if you decline. What is this going to achieve?" Ordinary people have said, "What's the use of gathering signatures when people know in their hearts that [Falun Gong] is good." However, they don't know that this forced signature gathering was specifically devised by Jiang Zemin to harass ordinary people and to make them pawns to bluff on his behalf.

The nine individuals include Zhang Changshun, vice director of the provincial Evil [Chinese government's slanderous word omitted] Precautions and Handling Office; Zhuang Min, vice director of the Public Security Department; Lin Bingzhi, vice director of the Provincial Judicial Department; Yang Junwen, member of the Standing Committee & secretary of the Politics and Law in Jinzhou City; Zhang Chaoying, director of the Masanjia Labor Camp; Lai Yongsheng, reporter of the News Center of the provincial television station; Zhan Jianguo (deceased), former assistant researcher in the Motion Technique Section of the provincial Public Security Department; Yue Shumin, vice secretary of the Municipal Committee in Dashiqiao City; Gu Hongwu, director of Home Security Section at the Shenyang Railway Public Security Bureau.

[Beijing] University Teachers and Students Arrested
Thirty-three-year old practitioner Shan Yan, a teacher from the Agriculture University, and his wife Li Wenlin, a lawyer at a large state-run enterprise, went to work on January 2, 2001, and never came home. As of now, their whereabouts are unknown, but it is believed they were arrested. For more than a year, police have staked out their apartment, watching their daily life and activities. Even the elevator operator and the gateman had the "duty" of reporting to the police whenever there were visitors to their home or when they left home.
After finding two cases of Dafa literature in his dormitory, the police arrested Liu Qian, a teacher from the Beijing Foreign Languages University. He hasn't been back yet.
University freshman Du Zhiming, a family member of an air force officer, was arrested while distributing literature about the truth of Dafa. She was doused with cold water and subjected to 10 degree below zero weather every day for two months at Haiding Detention Center. She was then sentenced to one year of forced labor "reeducation."
Dafa practitioners in the Zhongguanchun District firmly cultivate Dafa. Some of the practitioners have been detained for putting their statements on the Internet; others can't return to their homes.
[Shanghai, China] Several Hundred Dafa Practitioners Are Deceived And Sent to Transformation Class in Qingpu County
Before the Chinese New Year's Eve, Shanghai municipal authorities deceived a few hundred people, whom they regarded as determined Dafa practitioners, by saying that they wanted to talk to them. The authorities then detained the practitioners and sent them to a "Transformation Class" in Qingpu County, illegally depriving them of their physical freedom. We hope more practitioners can give up their attachments to their personal families, step forward, and not cooperate with the evil forces.

After the Chinese government staged the "self-immolation" incident, one practitioner, who is a high school teacher, promoted Dafa in the classroom. In addition to teaching regular knowledge, the teacher talked about Dafa from time to time, clarifying the truth to the students. The students were very excited to hear the facts that they couldn't read from government-controlled newspapers and TV programs. The teacher also told the students, "The authorities may arrest me soon for what I have just told you." The students replied, "Teacher, please be assured that we won't tell others. We will protect you." The students also pointed to the Blackboard Newspaper in the back of the classroom that contained articles slandering Falun Dafa and told the teacher that they would erase it. A few days later, when the teacher came back to give his next class, the Blackboard Newspaper had been replaced with all new articles.
