At the end of 2000, the city office and police department of Guanghan City in Sichuan Province conducted a massive search for Falun Gong practitioners. Over 100 practitioners were arrested from railway stations, bus stations, various transportation vehicles, and some from Beijing. They were locked in factory workshops and courtyards to attend "Transformation Classes." The guards actually outnumbered Dafa practitioners and were all young men. Everyday practitioners were forced to listen to recordings, watch videos, and read newspapers smearing Dafa. Everyday they were asked, "Are you going to practice Falun Gong?" Anyone who said "Yes" would not be allowed to go home.

Practitioners were not only brainwashed, but also physically tortured. They only had two meals of porridge (rice soup) a day, with less than 2 Lian (Chinese weight, about 0.18 pound) of rice per person. Boiled radishes or greens were served as the dish. They were often forced to go out to exercise in hunger. Some were made to run with large stones in their hands. Some were forced to keep their hands up over their head for half or a whole day. Some male practitioners were stripped off and forced to stand barefooted on cement floor with cold water poured on it, and several fans would blow on them. Many practitioners were put into a water jug and soaked in chilly water for a long time. Some female practitioners were made to remove all of their outer clothes and stand in the cold. Some wicked guards even brought in ice bricks and made practitioners stand on them. Even female practitioners over 50 were not exempt. Practitioners who bore such torment with an upright mind felt a warm stream emanate from the bottom of their feet.

The malicious men beat and kicked practitioners at their will. Sleeping on straw in the night was the best treatment: the blankets sent by family were not allowed to be used.

On the night of January 18, 2001, without any legal justification or procedures, police climbed over walls and broke into houses through balconies to arrested hundreds of practitioners from their homes, even dragging them from bed.

Mr. Yang didn't open his door to the police. With the help of a young policeman, Li Jun, head officer of the First Section in City Police Department, destroyed the burglarproof door and broke in. They took Mr. Yang, who is in his 70's, put him in a "transformation class," slapped him in the face, and forced him to sleep on cement floors. After enduring much hardship, he was put into a mental house for further torture.

Police showed practitioners newspapers and videos about the immolation on Tiananmen Square. Practitioners knew at a glance that it was a fraud and pointed it out. Running out of evil means, police pressured practitioners' spouses to divorce them. Although in great sufferings, practitioners continued to speak the truth with kindness. Many of the hired roughnecks were touched and changed their minds. They said, 'It is Chen Zhongyan, the chief officer, who made us beat you. You are really good people, not like what they said in the newspaper. We don't want to beat you anymore."

Most practitioners had been detained for 40 or 50 days, the shortest was 30 days. Finally, the felonious police required practitioners' family to turn in money before letting them go home. Each family was asked for at least l000 Yuan; some were forced to pay 6,000 or 7,000 Yuan (translator's note: monthly income of a worker in China is 600 yuan),

But there were still dozens of practitioners arrested or put in criminal detention. They were kept in Nanmenwai detention center of Guanghan city. All this was an indication of "love and care" from the government.
