RAPED AND BEATEN IN BEIJING BY PLAINCOTHES POLICEMAN

[Falun Gong Dafa Information Center, June 14] -- On the evening of May 14 in Beijing, a female Falun Gong practitioner was beaten and raped in the street when she was posting Falun Gong fliers.

According to this woman's account [name withheld to protect her identity], she was stopped by a plainclothes policeman when she was posting Falun Gong fliers along the city moat from Dabeiyao to Yonganli. After being beaten for more than one hour, she was pulled under a bridge, her pants ripped off and then she was raped and sexually abused with a police baton. The policeman claimed: "there are commands from the top to beat Falun Gong practitioners to death when catching them." The practitioner lost two front teeth during the beating, and several places of her head were severely injured.

The woman gave the following account: "A little bit after 9:00 pm on May 14 evening, I was stopped by a patrolling policeman (He was in plainclothes at that time) when I was posting Falun Gong fliers. This policeman appeared to be about 30 years old, 1.65 meters tall. He was very strong. He beat me for more than one hour until I felt I was on verge of dying. During that period more than ten onlookers came to see what was going on. The policeman shouted at them: "She is a Falun Gong practitioner, currently anti-revolutionary. Her being beaten to death will be counted as null'. No one dared to stay, and everyone went away in a hurry.

I was beaten to the ground and was not able to get up, and soon lost consciousness. At this moment he pulled me under a bridge, tore my pants apart and raped me. After that, he inserted a police baton forcefully into my vagina, and rode on my body. When I regained my strength and was able to shout, I shouted with all the strength I had: "Help! Catch this hooligan!" The man seemed to have no fear. Finally, he got on his bicycle and rode away in a hurry, leaving me behind." I had heard from police, 'Jiang Zemin ordered that Falun Gong practitioners' being beaten to death will be counted as null and reported as suicide.' I didn't dare to believe at that time. From my experience today, this is a cruel reality.

MONTREAL WOMAN DETAINED IN CHINA. WHEREABOUTS UNKNOWN

[MONTREAL GAZETTE, May 26, 2001] -- The last time anyone saw or heard from Ying Zhu was when she said goodbye to a friend at a Hong Kong train station. That was May 10. This week, the worst fears of her friends were confirmed by information obtained by a Hong Kong human-rights group: the 35-year-old Montreal woman and Falun Gong practitioner was arrested in China on her way to visit her husband and parents. Friends of Zhu, a Concordia computer-science student who is a permanent resident of Canada, are calling on the federal government to put pressure on China to free her... Canadian Alliance MP Scott Reid, who has taken up the cases of other persecuted Falun Gong followers, is poised to begin a letter-writing and awareness-raising campaign.

[CBC] - Zhu Ying is the fifth known Canadian resident to be detained or turned away by China, apparently because of their links to a movement China considers dangerous and subversive... Li and other friends of Zhu say what's especially worrisome in this case is neither Li nor Zhu is a public figure in the Falun Gong movement. Their names are not posted on Internet sites and they keep a low profile.... They say that's evidence Chinese government agents are keeping a tab on ordinary practitioners even outside the country.

JIANG ZEMIN #1 ON HUMAN RIGHTS "SCOUNDREL" LIST

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Amnesty International on Wednesday named Chinese President Jiang Zemin as one of its human rights "scoundrels" of 2000 in a condemnation of China's rights record that the group said did not appear to be improving with expanding trade ties... "We include Jiang Zemin for maintaining the Chinese Communist Party's grip on power through the widespread use of torture, persecution of minority groups and the denial of freedom of speech, association and religion," [William Schulz, the group's U.S. director ] said. In particular he cited the crackdown on the spiritual movement Falun ...

HONG KONG CRITICS URGE GOVT NOT TO FOLLOW FRENCH ANTI-CULT LAW

June 1, 2001 HONG KONG (AP)--Passage of a new anti-cult law in France sparked fears Friday that Hong Kong's freedoms could be under threat if the government here uses a similar measure to thwart the Falun Gong meditation sect. ... Falun Gong, local pro-democracy activists, and mainstream religions have all expressed worries that any government action against Falun Gong could threaten people of other beliefs, too. The Rev. Fung Chi-wood, a veteran civil rights campaigner, said he fears the government will use its political power to clamp down on religious groups. "I'm highly concerned about the whole thing," said Fung. "France is dealing with a religious issue, but we're dealing with a political issue here."

RESTAURANT OFF THE MENU SAY PRO-BEIJING CLANSMEN STAFF REPORTERS

[HONG KONG IMAIL] A Pro-Beijing organisation says it will stop holding functions at a chain of popular restaurants after discovering that local Falun Gong convenor Kan Hung-cheung is one of the company's shareholders. Anhai Clan Association Limited spokesman Mr Tsang, who declined to give his full name, said members had not been aware of Mr Kan's shareholding in Treasure Restaurant Company Limited. ``But we will pay more attention in choosing restaurants for gala dinners because we are a pro-China organisation,'' Mr Tsang said, adding that members would avoid going to the restaurants again. ...

[Beijing] 5/31 Police Force Falun Gong Practitioner to Swallow Sulphuric Acid Recently, a female Falun Dafa (Falun Gong) practitioner from Shijiazhuang City, Hebei Province just returned from appealing for Falun Dafa in Beijing. She said that after she was arrested and taken to Tiananmen Police Substation, the police used paper rolls soaked in sulphuric acid to pour acid into her nose and then forced her to swallow it; they also beat her brutally. Her face was so deformed that taxi drivers were afraid to pick her up after she was released that night.

[Northern China] Falun Gong Practitioners Hang Banners and Install Loudspeakers to Reveal the Truth About the PRC's Crackdown on Falun Gong In many of the cities near Emei Mountain, Sichuan Province; Changchun City, Jilin Province; Nanyang City, Henan Province, and several other cities and towns throughout Northwest China and other regions, Falun Gong practitioners continue to post hundreds of banners, distribute tens of thousands of flyers, and install loudspeakers in populated areas to reveal the truth behind the PRC's crackdown against Falun Gong. Although seldom reported in state-run newspapers and TV, these efforts continue on a daily basis, and are often positively received by Chinese citizens.
