MONTREAL, June 22 – Today, Falun Gong practitioner, landed immigrant of Canada and Concordia University student, Ying Zhu, held a news conference to recount the nightmare of her more than one month loss of freedom in China. She also expressed her sincere thanks to the many Canadian people who supported the strong campaign that led to her release.

Ying Zhu was arrested by Chinese authorities on her way to visit her husband and ailing mother in China on May 10, 2001. She regained her freedom and returned to Montreal at 1am on June 21, 2001.

"It has been a nightmare. I was kidnapped, interrogated, threatened, and mentally abused by the people from the National Security Department", said Ms. Zhu.

"I was completely isolated from the outside world, I was not allowed to contact anybody or make a phone call."

"I could not sleep with 3 people watching me at any minute and with a 120-Watt light bulb in front of my eyes."

"Every one of my movements, temperaments, expressions and emotions were recorded and filed."

Ms. Zhu recalled that a psychologist who attempted to brainwash her told her that all those who refuse to give up their belief in Falun Gong "have mental problems. The determined ones were all sent to psychiatric hospitals to receive psychiatric treatment."

Mr. Yumin Yang from Falun Gong group said, "We can see the horrifying stage that this crackdown against Falun Gong has reached from what Ying has endured. The Chinese President Jiang Zemin has made it a crime for Falun Gong practitioners to simply exist. "

"In a desperate attempt to eliminate Falun Gong practitioners, Jiang Zemin has implemented a new law that permits even execution of Falun Gong practitioners. In the 10 days after the new law was passed, more than 11 practitioners have died under Jiang Zemin's new law. It is clearly an attempt to provide a legal basis for organized killing of Falun Gong practitioners and the number of deaths is escalating," stated Mr. Yang.
