54 Dead from Torrents in Hunan Province

[Minghui Net, June 24, 2001] According to a report by Radio Free Asia in Beijing, two severe mountain torrents occurred in Suining County, Hunan Province. These heavy rains destroyed more than 2,400 homes and claimed approximately 54 lives. In addition, 112 people have been reported missing.

An official involved in the torrent control reported to AFP that this flood had caused severe damage to the local industry, comprising agriculture and livestock farming. The lives of over 250,000 people were impacted. This official pointed out that because the affected areas were located in remote mountainous regions with underdeveloped transportation and communication systems, the rescue efforts encountered severe difficulties.
