Seven Dead and Nine Missing as Torrential Rain Hits Northwest Sichuan Province

September 19, 2001

(Clearwisdom.net) According to a report on September 19 from the Xinhua News Agency, torrential rains attacked part of Sichuan province overnight, causing 7 deaths and at least 9 disappearances. By 9 o'clock in the morning, the precipitation in the 12 cities and counties of northwest Sichuan had reached 50 mm, with the heaviest rainfall at 260 mm in Jingyang district of Deyang city and 250 mm in the downtown section of Mianyang city.

What was unique about this precipitation was its strong intensity and broad range. At present, a lot of streets in Mianyang City have been submerged and the water in some places has been chest-deep. Due to the accumulated rainwater, traffic in the city has been at a standstill, and the highways to Chengdu city and to other cities have been cut off as well.

Up to the time the journalist sent out this report, the heavy rains had not stopped yet, and the damage in different areas is still under investigation.
