IFCSS Press Conference: Opening Remarks October 4, 2002 Good morning, ladies and gentlemen, members of the press. Welcome to this press conference. We
will start with introduction of the Independent Federation of Chinese Students & Scholars in the
United States. Then Mr. Danxuan Yi, President of the IFCSS, is going to read a statement on behalf
of its members, urging China's president Jiang Zemin disclose terms of Sino-Russian border treaties.
We will present different maps to show how some land belonging to China has disappeared over the years. Let me start by introducing the Independent Federation of Chinese Students & Scholars in the
United States, IFCSS. Forty thousand overseas Chinese students and scholars in the U.S established
IFCSS shortly after the Tiananmen Massacre in 1989. We uphold the spirit of science and reason. We
respect and cherish basic human rights. We are committed to the advancement of civilization, and
we seek a peaceful, free, and democratic society and political system. We are genuinely concerned
with the progress of democracy in China. China's Communist Party leader Jiang Zemin is planning to visit the United States later this
month. He was promoted to be the national "leader" due to his "excellent
performance" in the suppression of the 1989 student movement when he was in Shanghai. As a "leader" not elected by Chinese people, his top priority is to consolidate
his power. Analysts say that the main purpose of visiting the U.S. this time is an attempt to
keep him in power. Even the Party's 16th Congress is postponed to facilitate his personal
desire. He has a "good" reason for his unwillingness to retire. He dares not to step down.
Once he steps down and is out of the protection of his office, he will have to pay for all the bad
deeds he has done! Among those deeds could well be the Sino-Russian border treaties, which has been
found very skeptical by many concerned Chinese. We hereby urge him to disclose terms of these treaties. Now the President of IFCSS is going to read a statement concerning this matter. Posting date: 10/10/2002
