Excerpt from News Release of Informal Meeting between Jiang and Former President Yeltsin of Russia


(Xinhua News Agency, Beijing December 10th , 1999) Invited by China's president, Boris Yeltsin, the president of the Russian Federation, visited China from December 9th through 10th of 1999. The presidents of the two countries held a second informal meeting.

The leaders of the two countries pointed out that the important content of the guiding principle of equal and trustworthy strategic cooperation was being fulfilled step by step. The agreement reached at the first informal meeting between the presidents of China and the Russia Federation in November 1998 was carried out substantially.

During the meeting, both sides signed a narrative protocol by the government of the People's Republic of China and the Russian Federation government regarding the east end and west ends of the China-Russia border.

The two parties thought highly of the completion of the prospecting work on the part of the China-Russia border that was agreed upon. They emphasized that both sides would seek a resolution for the China-Russia national boundary that was not agreed upon in a constructive and practical spirit.

Both sides signed an agreement regarding mutual economic development of some islands and nearby marine areas in the bordering river, which is an important step toward improved cooperation in bordering area. According to this agreement, residents of part of the China-Russia boundary area are allowed to engage in traditional economic activities in some islands and nearby marine areas that have been decided to belong to the other country according to the result of prospecting. This agreement accorded with the interests of boundary area residents and reflected a high level of trust between the two countries.
