They had illegally taken Zhang Zengyan away a few times and fined her 26,200 Yuan. Due to the harassment, arrests, ransacking and fines, his wife could not go home. During the last two years, he often suffered from headaches, dizziness, and fainting spells.

On the eve of Chinese National Day, police again snuck into Shang Baolin's home and tried to arrest his wife Zhang Zengyan. At the time, Zhang Zengyan was at her mother's home. The police couldn't find her and threatened Shang Baolin to tell them where his wife was, otherwise they said they would take him to the police station.
