ABC (Australia): Protestors oppose Hong Kong sedition laws

LATEST STORIES

A mass demonstration has been staged in Hong Kong over proposed anti-subversion laws for the region.

China Correspondent John Taylor reports tens of thousands of people yesterday marched through the former British colony.

"The demonstrators called for the Hong Kong administration to drop plans to enact "Article 23" into the regions basic law."

"The provision concerns laws regarding treason, succession, subversion, and sedition against China's Communist Party, and the theft of state secrets."

"As many as 100 civil and religious groups joined in the march, including leaders of the Roman Catholic diocese and the Falun Gong movement which is [banned]on mainland China."

"The groups believe the laws if enacted would curb religious and personal freedoms in Hong Kong."
