The police at the Wanjia labor camp constantly beat Falun Dafa practitioners, frequently saying "We'll torture you to death!" They openly say things like, "We're not afraid if someone dies. The old No.3 class had three inmates that died, and they died in vain! There are plenty of small coffins in the labor camp!" After suffering a particularly brutal round of beatings in the Wanjia labor camp, five Falun Dafa practitioners were made to feel as though living there was worse than death. They decided to use their own lives to create an environment for others that would be fit for human existence.

On the evening of January 19th, 2002, Falun Dafa practitioners Zhao Xiru, He Miao, Lu Huiwen, Sun Lizhi, and Sun Yanfang left their last words (a poem), and tied ropes around their necks. We have heard that this incident of attempted suicide shocked both the Provincial Police and Provincial Labor Re-education Bureaus, yet none of the abusive police officers have received any form of punishment.

We call upon all kindhearted people in the world, international organizations, and human rights organizations to pay attention to the crimes of the Wanjia labor camp. We also hope that the Chinese government will legally punish those vicious police officers at Wanjia labor camp for their disregard of the law and for their inhuman, abusive behavior.

At the same time, as cultivators, we re-state that we do not accept any persecutory arrangements of the evil forces. Amidst severe situations, we should deal with the evil in a more rational, wise way; we should walk steadily towards the day when the truth will be completely revealed and all evil eliminated. The precious lives that Dafa gave to us are for the purpose of Fa-rectification and cultivation. The evil's persecution is precisely intended to end our Fa-rectification and cultivation by force. Therefore, in the face of the evil persecution, we should definitely keep a clear mind of rationality and wisdom. Do not let our thoughts fall into everyday people's mentalities, and definitely do not let the evil get what they want.

Below is the detailed story of how the Wanjia labor camp drove people towards suicide on January 17th, 2002.

Falun Dafa practitioner Zhao Xiru was carried on someone's back to the Wanjia labor camp hospital. Upon examination with an electrocardiograph, she was diagnosed as a high-risk patient with heart disease. According to the law, she should thus not be made to continue labor re-education, and should have been given medical parole. But as the Wanjia labor camp is never concerned about whether people live or die, she was illegally re-admitted.

On February 17th, 2002, Zhao felt very weak. It had been 7 days since she became unable to eat or even drink water. She could hardly stand up, and was resting in bed. At around 8 P.M., Zhao was having a heart attack. Her face was very pale and she was sitting up in the bed. Police officer Wang Junping saw her, kicked the door open and walked in, which startled Zhao. Another officer, Hu Bo, came in and asked Zhao what she was doing. Zhao told Hu, "My heart doesn't feel good. I just want to sit for a little while. I am not meditating." Hu said, "No," and slapped Zhao's face twice. Zhao asked her, "You openly beat a Dafa practitioner. Aren't you afraid of being exposed?" Hu said, "I am not afraid. This precisely proves that I did my job." Then she started continuously beating her. Police officers Wang Junping and Han Yushan also came and joined the beating, with a broom and a mop. It looked as though they would beat her to death.

The Falun Dafa practitioners in the room were all on their feet, trying to protect Zhao from the beating. The police would then beat whoever they caught, seemingly never wanting to stop. He Miao is a Falun Dafa practitioner who had been on a hunger strike for 89 days. She was beaten and fell on the ground, again and again. They struck at Kang Cuixian, a 53-year-old Dafa practitioner, and with one heavy blow, she crashed into the cabinet containing the lunch bowls. Lu Huiwen, Sun Yanfang, and Sun Lizhi pleaded with the police tearfully, "Please don't beat her, beat us instead! She was carried in [i.e. she's in such poor condition she can't even walk]. She has heart disease, and she hasn't been able to eat for several days." Even the head prisoner Wang Xiaohong (not a Falun Dafa practitioner) could not bear the cruelty, so she used her own body to try to block the beating.

Because of the brutality, Zhao Xiru was rendered unable to even move on the bed. These inhuman police officers could not care less; they still kept beating and cursing. Policewoman Han Yushan grabbed Zhao's hair tightly, and continued to beat her up. Two Falun Dafa practitioners tried to unlock her grip, but were unable to. Han kept on beating Zhao until she was satisfied. Without everyone's protection, Zhao probably would have died on the spot. We can see just how malicious these police officers are.

When they felt that it was enough beating and were getting ready to leave, officer Wang Junping cursed some more at Zhao. Zhao Xiru was beaten so brutally, just because she wanted to sit up for a little while. She had only been there for four days, and yet both her body and heart were abused to such a degree! Still, the beating she received was actually less severe than what He Miao endured. The Wanjia Hospital is not for treating patients, but rather for killing people. The police at Wanjia labor camp never treat people as human beings. They constantly beat up Falun Dafa practitioners, kick open the doors of the cells, curse all the time, constantly repeating "We'll torture you to death!"

The Falun Dafa practitioners who are locked in the Wanjia labor camp are living in a terrible environment. They are facing the danger of fatal torture at every minute. After this cruel beating occurred, the practitioners were in despair. They had been made to feel as though living there was worse than death. Thus, they decided to use their own lives to try and create a habitable environment for the others. On the night of January 19th, 2002, the five women, Zhao Xiru, He Miao, Lu Huiwen, Sun Yanfang, and Sun Lizhi put ropes around their necks, planning to leave Wanjia, that den of evil. If head prisoner Wang Xiaohong had not found them and stopped them in time, a great tragedy would have taken place.

We have heard that the incident of five Dafa practitioners attempting to hang themselves shook the whole Provincial Police and Provincial Labor Re-education Bureaus, yet none of the abusive police officers have been punished. The reason these evil police dare to commit such bad deeds is that Jiang's regime in China harbors criminals at all levels of government. The evil police are fearless because they have Jiang to fall back on. This is what Jiang calls "the best period for human rights," a time in which police take cursing at people as their jobs and killing good people as their merit.

We call upon all kindhearted people in the world, international organizations, and human rights organizations to pay attention to the crimes in the Wanjia labor camp. We also hope that the Chinese government will bring those vicious police in Wanjia labor camp to justice for their wanton disregard for the law and for their inhuman abusive behavior. We cannot let these cases happen any more, wherein police treat human life as nothing but a worthless piece of straw!

Below are the last words, in the form of a poem, written by those five Falun Dafa practitioners before they were brought to the point of hanging themselves. It is entitled "Declaration of Death."

Five Falun Dafa practitioners last words in Wanjia on January 17^th, 2002:

Wanjia hospital is too cruel,
Beating, cursing, torturing ill patients.
Dafa disciples trying to stop it,
We were all beaten up even worse.
This hospital is not a place for medical treatment,
Killing is what the police really want to do.
Living [here] is worse than death, forcing us to hang ourselves.
Police and doctors here are too tormenting.
Either beating or cursing is their daily routine,
Kicking the doors, frightening people.
Knowing the medicines are not working,
Scratching the scabies is venting their personal hatred.
Learning the Fa and practicing the exercises is not wrong,
Sending forth righteous thoughts is saving sentient beings.
The cultivators are being persecuted,
At this time we have no place to appeal to put things right.
In order to tell people to keep their minds clear,
[We] give up our lives to resist the evil.
