The United Nations Commission On Human Rights Adopts Resolution Against Torture
(Clearwisdom.net) April 23rd news from Geneva: The United Nations
Commission on Human Rights adopted a resolution on Monday that international
organizations and certain nations establish a preventive system to regularly
inspect specific countries and regions for abuse and torture of prisoners. This
resolution has been adopted to prevent arbitrary torture and infringement on
human rights and is sponsored by Costa Rica, with 29 votes in favor, 10 opposed
and 14 abstentions. The opposing countries include China, Cuba, Japan, Libya,
Libyan Arab Jamahiriya, Malaysia, Nigeria, North Korea, Saudi Arabia, Sudan and
the Syrian Arab Republic. This resolution is supplemental to the 1984 United
Nations Anti-Torture Treaty. The United Nations Commission on Human Rights
recommended to the United Nations Economic and Social Council for adoption and
recommended it to the United Nations General Assembly for adoption and opening
for signatures and ratification. |
