Letter to Premier Zhu Rongji from the Canadian Federation of Students, Quebec branch
Premier of the People's Republic of China
Your Excellency,
I am writing on behalf of the Canadian Federation of Students, Quebec branch.
We are very concerned with the treatment in China of Falun Gong practitioners in
general, and specifically relating to recent events in the city of Changchun,
Jilin Province. We have been notified that over 5000 practitioners of Falun Gong
have been detained, and up to 100 have been killed. Much police activity has
been conducted secretly, and police are encouraged to arrest Falun Gong
practitioners.
We strongly urge you to guarantee the safety of all those detained in
connection with the broadcast on the Changchun TV station this March and during
the ensuing police operation. It is very important that you make known the
detainees' names and whereabouts, and ensure that they have access to lawyers,
their families, and medical attention.
Furthermore, all those Falun Gong members who have been detained solely for
peaceful exercise of their fundamental human rights should be released
immediately and unconditionally.
Finally, we have been informed of the many human rights violations, such as
the torture of Falun Gong practitioners, and therefore call on you to publicly
express your concern regarding these issues to ensure that those responsible are
brought to justice as soon as possible.
Sincerely,
Aimee van Drimmelen, Chairperson
Canadian Federation of Students - Quebec Posting date: 5/23/2002
