Support Letter from US Congressman Robin Hayes, North Carolina [July 19, 2002]

8th District, North Carolina

Dear ... (name omitted to avoid Chinese embassy's harassment):

Thank you for contacting my office about human rights violations in China. I appreciate hearing form you on this issue.

Democracy, freedom, and the right to live under a government by and for the people are ideals cherished not only by Americans, but by people all over the globe. It is very disturbing to hear reports of autocratic governments committing human rights atrocities and persecuting citizens who hold different ideological and/or religious beliefs. These blatant human and civil rights violations should not be overlooked. The United States should be a beacon to other nations trying to establish democratic governments, and we should be supportive in those efforts whenever possible.

I appreciate you bringing to my attention the events happening in Washington in support of Falun Gong. I also am glad that you were able to stop by and meet with Jennifer Thompson of my staff. Increasing awareness in Congress and across the nation about the abuses in China is important. I am hopeful that the Chinese government will end persecution based on any religious faith, and improve their human rights record. As you know, while in China earlier this year, President Bush repeatedly pressed his theme that religious and political freedom would not lead to chaos, using words that were both a forceful projection of his own religious faith and a subtle criticism of what he sees as the oppressiveness of President Jiang Zemin's government. I believe that China can learn much from our nation that freedom of religion is not something to be feared, but it's to be welcomed. President Bush delivered this message strongly and eloquently while in China. We must continue working to further help improve the human rights situation in China.

It is an honor to serve as your United States Representative, and I enjoy tackling the issues 8th District voters sent me here to address. Please know that I have assembled what I believe is the most responsive and courteous staff in Congress. Your suggestions are always welcome, and if ever we may be of assistance, please do not hesitate to call.

Sincerely,
Robin Hayes
Member of Congress
