Dear Falun Gong Supporters and Practitioners of Maryland:

Thank you for your invitations to the events on July 22-23. I am sorry that I am unable to be with you.

I share your belief that freedom of religion is a basic human right that should be protected for individuals worldwide. The efforts of your organization to end the persecution of Falun Gong practitioners in China are commendable. As you may know, I joined several of my colleagues in writing to President Bush in February, requesting that during his visit to China he express our nation's great concern over the Chinese government's campaign of terror against Falun Gong practitioners. In addition, we urged for the immediate release of several specific victims.

Again, I appreciate your invitation and would like to send you my best wishes for a successful event. Please keep me informed of future events.
