Thank you for your letter of 7 August 2002 and accompanying CD and publication featuring your artwork which I have read with close interest.

The promotion and protection of human rights is an integral part of the Government's foreign policy reflecting the democratic values of New Zealand society. We are committed to upholding the fundamental rights and freedoms enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and core international human rights treaties. These include the freedom of expression, religion and belief, and we will continue to urge those countries that have not yet signed and ratified these treaties, including the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, to do so as soon as possible.
