On September 18, a new brainwashing class was established inside Tangshan's No.1 Labor Camp. Police ordered inmates to persecute Falun Gong practitioners, denying them sleep for 24 hours straight. Practitioners are being tortured to death, but police are attempting to block any news from getting out. They have not notified the practitioners' family members and have held the remains of practitioners who have been tortured to death.

Prior to the establishment of the brainwashing class, a 60-year old Falun Gong practitioner was tied to a bed. Police kicked and fractured this practitioner's arms and did not permit him to obtain any treatment. His arms have still not healed.

Those responsible for the persecution: Wang Yulin, Li Xiaozhong, and Li Weiping

Ms. Bi Xiaojun is a practitioner from Hefei City, Anhui Province. One night during the "Sixteenth Conference" last year, she was walking down a street with a friend. Several police officers grabbed them off the street. After a night of detention, Ms. Bi's friend was very tired and so took out a pack of cigarettes to smoke. He asked the police officer who was watching him if he would like one. This policeman was surprised and asked him, "Are you not a Falun Gong practitioner?" [note: Falun Gong practitioners do not smoke or drink alcohol] This friend shook his head and said, "I was just talking to Ms. Bi when you guys arrested me." The policeman was very embarrassed and released him in the morning. However, Ms. Bi has been in detention since that day. During her detention police have attempted to interrogate her many times. Police have handcuffed her for two months, causing her arms to swell and her wrists and hands to fester because rusted handcuffs have cut into her flesh.

Because there was no evidence to detain her, the officials conducted a secret trial this year, where the court told her: "Only if you say that you will give up practicing Falun Gong, we will release you. We will sentence you to jail if you insist on practicing." Her employers also told her: "We have driven a car here. Only if you say that you will give up the practice, will we take you home." Bi Xiaojun simply said, "I will practice," and she was sentenced to four years in jail.

Heizuizi Labor Camp persecutes Falun Gong practitioners by forcing them to do extremely heavy labor and depriving them of sleep.

4. [Yidu City, Hubei Province] Cases of Practitioners Being Persecuted

Mr. Xiao Gang was arrested and detained in early September. Ms. Zheng Jumei and Mr. Zhao Jucai were arrested and detained in the middle of September by Yidu Police Department and are still in detention.

Police are also illegally detaining Mr. Wei Shenghua and have taken him to Changyang.

Ms. He Yan, a 28-year old teacher from the Dongxihu School in Wuhan City, Hubei Province, was transferred from Hewan Forced Labor Camp to a brainwashing class in Yangyuan in July 2003. She suffered various forms of torture, but remained steadfast. Her current whereabouts are unknown.

Two steadfast Falun Gong practitioners are being detained in the Longjiang Boarding House in Dongli District in Harbin City, where brainwashing classes are held.

Ms. Yan Ting, a 24-year old practitioner lives in the Taian Beer Factory Dormitory. On September 28, 2003 at 10 a.m., a policeman Gao XX from Tai Mountain Police Department and a dozen other police officers from Xujialou Town Police Station broke into her home, claiming that people in her dormitory had reported her. They ransacked her house and took away Falun Gong books and some materials clarifying the truth about the persecution. They arrested her and took her to Xujialou Town Police Station.

Mr. Duan Xinshu and Mr. Li Jingjun are Falun Gong practitioners from Nanduan Village in Caozhuang Town, Jize Town, Hebei Province. Not long ago, under orders from their superiors, Caozhuang Town police officers forced two practitioners to write "guarantee letters." These practitioners firmly refused to sign. On September 25, the police arrested them and sent them to a brainwashing class in Handan.

Two Falun Gong practitioners, including 31-year old Ms. Su Min, were arrested on September 26 and 28. Their current whereabouts are unknown.

On the afternoon of September 28, 2003 five policemen from Yingyang City broke into Ms. Chen Li's home in Shangjie District, Zhengzhou. The police took her to the Yingyang Police Station where she remains in detention.

On September 3, 2003 at 11 a.m., Mr. Wang Shucheng and Ms. Yu Guangxia from Lutos Town in Shulan City were arrested while on their way home. On September 14, police ransacked their homes. Police threatened them and extorted 2000 Yuan from them. They forced these practitioners to sign a "guarantee letter" before they released them.

12. [Jiutai City, Jilin Province] Zhao Litang is Persecuted in Yinmahe Forced Labor Camp

Mr. Zhao Litang is a Falun Gong practitioner from the Yanbian area in Jilin Province. He was detained for three years and was released last July. He was arrested again this May 18 and was detained in the Yinmahe Forced Labor Camp in Jiutai. Since then Zhao has been detained in solitary confinement twice, seven and ten days respectively. During his confinement, he was forbidden to use the bathroom and given only 50 grams of very salty food per day. Zhao Litang has also been sent to a class where practitioners are vigilantly monitored and persecuted. Most recently he was put under strict supervision, which will last 30 days. The police continue to torture Zhao. He recently fainted in the class. Ms. Wang Na, a university student and Ms. Jing Lianhua are also being tortured.

On September 26, 2003, in a city in Shandong province, 30 Falun Gong practitioners held a small-scale experience sharing conference, which lasted for four hours. At the beginning, practitioners sent forth righteous thoughts and eliminated the evil. Then together we recited "On Buddha Law." Afterwards some practitioners spoke about their understanding of Teacher's recent lectures. We discussed the idea of improving as a one body in the Beijing area. We also talked about our experiences in Fa-rectification cultivation, the process and feeling of eliminating the persecution of evil with righteous thoughts. As a whole, practitioners came to the understanding that we should do the three things Teacher has required of us more seriously and actively and continue creating the environment of Fa rectification. At the same time, we should keep strengthening our righteous thoughts, not allowing the evil to have any opportunity to take advantage of us. We must take each step steadily.

The staff of the brainwashing class in Fushun has continually threatened Falun Gong practitioners: "You will be sentenced to three years of forced labor if you do not give up your practice." A steadfast practitioner was released at the end of the month-long class. He was neither "transformed"[This term is used to describe a Falun Gong practitioner who renounces his belief after being tortured] nor sent to a forced labor camp.

Ms. Xie Yanxing from Liaohe Oil Field was arrested in August. She went on a hunger strike for over 20 days. The brainwashing class released her. Some other practitioners went on hunger strike for several days, but were not released.

The police force in Lushuihe Town, Fusong County, Baishan City, Jilin Province monitors Falun Gong practitioners in order to persecute them. On September 25, 2003, they arrested six Falun Gong practitioners. Among them were Ms. Min Shaoyun, an elementary school teacher, Ms. Xing Yunfeng, Ms. Li, and Ms. Gao, who is over 60 years old. They were detained in the Fusong County Detention Center. After Ms. Xing was arrested, her son was left home alone with no one to take care of him.

16. [China] Content Inciting Hatred Towards Falun Gong is Added to a Supplementary Textbook for Graduate School Entrance Exam

Included in a supplementary textbook for Graduate School in Engineering Entrance Exam is content slandering Falun Gong. This book is published by Qinghua University Publishing House and compiled by the State Engineer Master Degree Education Committee. The chief editor is Ding Xia and the other editors are Xiao Jian, Xu Rong, Zhu Qingqing, and Xia Hua.

According to news from Mainland China, China's Minister of Culture is preparing to set up Internet monitoring equipment in each county and city in every province to carry out large-scale Internet monitoring, which was previously limited to big cities. They plan to finish the installation before the end of this year.

Recently Lishu County in Siping City, Jilin Province began a large-scale search for Falun Gong practitioners. Several practitioners have been arrested and detained in a detention center.

On September 16, police surround the home of Falun Gong practitioner Ms. Zuo Siqi for several days. They finally arrested her and sent her to Wenjiang brainwashing class to persecute her.

Ms. Liu Chunlan and Ms. Yuan Junhong were arrested by police while they were distributing materials clarifying the truth about Falun Gong. Later Ms. Wang Xiurong was also arrested at her work place and sent to the Tiedong Police Station. She was detained in an iron cage and forbidden to wear shoes. These three practitioners' homes were all ransacked.
