Sweden: Letter from a Practitioner to the U.S. Embassy

Honorary Secretary of State,

I am writing to you in concern for Dr Charles Li, an American Citizen arbitrarily detained in China on the 22nd of January. He is facing a sentence of up to 15 years in a Chinese prison on dubious charges.

According to the U.S. consulate in Shanghai, on January 22, Chinese security officers arrested Charles Li, a U.S. citizen from the San Francisco Bay Area, shortly after he landed at Guangzhou Airport in China. He was then transferred to Yangzhou City, Zhejiang Province, thousands of miles away from Guangzhou. U.S. consular officials are allowed only one 30-minute meeting with Charles Li each month.

Charles Li's Chinese name is Li Xiangchun. He is in his 30s, and holds a doctoral degree in medical science. He formerly did research at Harvard University, and moved to the San Francisco Bay Area in 2000. He manages his own business, which is related to Chinese medicine.

I am seriously concerned for Dr Charles Li's safety, as he is a Falun Gong practitioner, and Falun Gong is known to be dealt with very fiercely by the Chinese Regime. I received a note in mid January about a lady named Qunying Liu, a Falun Gong practitioner who was tortured to death within 3 hours after being arbitrarily detained by police in Caidian District, China. We have every reason to worry about Dr Charles Li's safety, I kindly and whole heartedly appeal to you to urgently request China to release Dr Li, and allow him to return to his wife and home in the United States.
