Amnesty International is investigating the recent detention of Dr. Charles Li, a U.S. citizen, by
Chinese authorities. We are aware that he is currently being detained in the Yangzhou Detention
Center. In accordance with international law, Chinese authorities must make any charges against Dr.
Li public and officially inform the family of any charges so that a lawyer may be hired for his
defense. Amnesty International is also concerned about Dr. Li's health and is seeking assurances
from the Chinese government that he is not being ill-treated. Dr. Li must also be given access to
the U.S. consulate given his status as a U.S. citizen. Amnesty International is continuing to
monitor and gather more information in this case.
