Letter from Falun Dafa Association of Finland to American Embassy in Beijing Calls for Release of Charles Li

Your Excellency,

I am writing on behalf of the Falun Gong practitioners in Finland, about an issue with which we are very concerned. We have heard that a US citizen and Falun Gong practitioner Charles Li was detained in China after arriving at Guangzhou airport on January 22nd this year. We have learned that he is facing a sentence of up to 15 years in a Chinese prison on false charges. We seriously believe that the sole reason Chinese authorities treat him like this is because he is a Falun Gong practitioner.

The arrest of Charles Li is another clear example of how the persecution of Falun Gong is not only limited to people living in China but concerns people in other countries too.

Charles Li has a fiancée in the US and friends who are longing very much for his release, as are all Falun Gong practitioners around the world. US consular officials are allowed only one 30-minute meeting with Charles Li per month. He may be under serious risk of being tortured and ill-treated, just like hundreds of thousands of other Falun Gong practitioners in China.

This is not the first time that Jiang Zemin's regime has extended the persecution of Falun Gong to citizens of the US using false accusations. It is obvious that this is just another way for Jiang's regime to persecute innocent people who practice Falun Gong. More and more people around the world are aware of this fact. Jiang Zemin and the "6-10" office, which was specifically created by him to direct the "elimination" of Falun Gong, are in the process of being sued in a US Federal Court for genocide. Also, on July 24 2002, the House of Representatives of the United States of America unanimously passed House Concurrent Resolution 188, condemning the persecution of Falun Gong practitioners in China and in America. The United States has made great efforts to stop the injustice forced upon Falun Gong practitioners. We would like to extend our biggest acknowledgement here to your country for devoting so much effort to stopping the persecution of Falun Gong and for validating human rights in China. It is definitely helping to create a safer and more righteous world around us.

We believe that we can count on the government of the United States of America, without any concern, to uphold justice and human rights and to help rescue Charles Li. We are sure that the US embassy in Beijing has the power to rescue its own citizen from being treated in a manner that violates basic human rights.

We are watching the situation closely and waiting for Charles to rejoin his fiancée and for him to regain a normal life as soon as possible.
