Ottawa Sun: Falun Gong [practitioner] rallies for kin

Monday, April 14, 2003

Standing on the sun-drenched boulevard across from the grey-stone Chinese Embassy yesterday, Yuzhi Wang made a pledge: Not to stay silent.

Gesturing while she spoke through an interpreter, the petite 46-year-old said nothing will stop her from trying to save her siblings, whose whereabouts are being withheld by the Chinese government.

"I will not be silenced because they will take revenge against me."

As a Falun Gong practitioner, Wang said she was detained by the Chinese government and endured beatings and brainwashing.

On the verge of death and nearly blind, the former small business owner from Harbin City was temporarily released from custody.

Reunited with Hubby, Son

She managed to leave China for the United Arab Emirates, but was arrested at the insistence of Chinese officials.

A plea for help to Canadian Falun Gong practitioners led to the Canadian government intervening on Wang's behalf. She received a special visa and arrived in Vancouver last November, where she was reunited with her husband and son.

Wang, along with other practitioners, spent the weekend in front of the Chinese Embassy, protesting the illegal detention of her siblings -- Chengyuan Wang, 37, Chunyu Wang, 48, and Yuxiang Wang, 42 -- by the Chinese government.

Although they don't practise Falun Gong, Wang said they were arrested for their connection to her.
