Borough of Ramsey, New Jersey, Passes a Resolution Urging the US Government to Press China to End the Repression and Torture of Their Citizens [July 9, 2003]

Council of the Borough of Ramsey

Whereas, the Borough of Ramsey recognizes the rights of all citizens of the world to live peacefully and without repression places upon them by their governments; and

Whereas, it has been brought to the attention of the Mayor and Council of the Borough of Ramsey that the People's Republic of China and all other countries continue to repress, torture, unlawfully detain and otherwise ignore the rights of various of its citizens; and

Whereas, through its Mayor and Council the people of Ramsey recognize the rights of all citizens in the world to be protected from such repression, particularly the citizens of the People's Republic of China and all other countries.

Now, Therefore, Be It Resolved, that the Mayor and Council of the Borough of Ramsey urges the United States Government to continue to press the People's Republic of China and all other countries to end the repression and torture of their citizens; and

Be It Further Resolved, that the Mayor and Council urge the United States Congress to press the Chinese Government and all other governments to stop repression and torture of innocent individuals and, to recognize the rights of citizens within their countries to exercise free speech and expression; and

Be It Further Resolved, that a copy of this Resolution be forwarded to the Bergen County Board of Freeholders, County Executive McNerney, the Office of the Governor of the State of New Jersey, U.S. Senator John Corzine, U.S. Senator Frank Lautenberg and Congressman Scott Garrett.

I certify that this is a true copy of a resolution passed and approved at the regular council meeting of the Mayor and Council held on July 9, 2003.
