Zhang Yali, a woman in her 30's, was an accountant at the No. 2 Oil Extraction plant of the Oil Exploration Bureau in Henan Province. Her husband was the assistant manager of the plant. Their daughter is a junior high school student. Zhang Yali was very responsible in her job, worked hard and diligently, and was very kind. She proactively carried out her assignments at her job and was well liked by her colleagues.

While Zhang Yali was being persecuted, her husband continually tried to force her to write the so-called "guarantee statement" to betray her belief in Truth-Compassion-Tolerance. Refusing to do so, she had no choice but to accept a divorce. Because she insisted on practicing Falun Dafa, the police department of the Oil Extraction Plant sentenced her to forced labor. In the Zhengzhou City's Shibalihe Forced Labor Camp she was killed while being subjected to the strait jacket torture. She is one of the three Dafa practitioners reported by Clearwisdom to have been killed in this way on June 4, 2003 at the Zhengzhou Shibalihe Forced Labor Camp.

Zhang Yali went to Beijing a total of three times to appeal for Dafa. When Jiang's regime began the persecution on July 20, 1999, she went to Beijing for the first time. She was arrested and escorted back by her work unit. She appealed a second time in June of 2000. Carrying a large bag of truth-clarifying materials copied in a printing shop, she went to Beijing alone to validate Dafa. After she distributed all the materials, she went to Tiananmen Square and shouted loudly, "Falun Dafa is good." The police at Tiananmen beat and detained her at the Tiananmen Square Police Station. At the police station, Zhang Yali refused to give her name and address, so the police beat her. She continued to refuse to tell her name and address. The police began to threaten her in the presence of many male Dafa practitioners, saying that they would take off her clothes if she insisted on refusing to tell her name. Zhang Yali ignored the threats. Eventually, the police came up to strip her in front of onlookers. In order to not be humiliated further, she told them her address and was then sent to the Nanyang local contact office in Beijing.

Several days later, her husband and her co-workers went to Beijing to pick her up. Zhang Yali left the Beijing contact office with righteous thoughts, going to Tiananmen Square again to validate Dafa. Without money for transportation, she walked until her feet developed large blisters. Feeling that it was difficult to walk any further, she wanted to exchange her necklace for one Yuan to buy bus fare. A kind passerby gave her one Yuan without taking the necklace. She was then arrested once again by the police at Tiananmen Square.

Zhang Yali was detained in Tanghe County's detention center after her husband and co-workers took her back to Nanyang City. While she was detained, her work unit told her that she would affect her husband's promotion if she refused to write the "guarantee statements." In fact, her husband had already attempted to persuade her to write the "guarantee statements" many times. Later, her family members spent money to get her out of detention.

After Zhang Yali came out of Tanghe County's detention center, she went to Beijing to appeal for Dafa a third time. Her work unit took her back and detained her. In the summer, the leaders of her work unit forced her to kneel down on the ground under the scorching sun. She was continually subjected to abuse, yet insisted in refusing to write "guarantee statements", even after her husband tried to force her to do so repeatedly. She was eventually forced to divorce him.

Later, her work unit sent her to the brainwashing center for further persecution. She was able to successfully evade this with righteous thoughts but had to leave home and live with a relative. The leaders of her work unit, together with Bai Guoyin, the chief of the Police Department of the oil extraction plant, and Zhang Zhenyi, a division supervisor in the National Security Bureau, deceived her husband by telling him that they wanted to let Zhang Yali come back to resume her regular job. Her husband called her back from her relative's home but when the two of them went to the office, the police who had been waiting there for her grabbed her and carried her into a vehicle. They sent her to Tanghe County's detention center and locked her in a cell. While in the detention center, she insisted on studying Dafa and doing the exercises. The prison guard Wang Yanling would confiscate Dafa books and articles from her.

In May 2001, Zhang Yali was sentenced and sent to Zhengzhou City's Shibalihe Female Forced Labor Camp. While in the camp, she refused to cooperate with the police and staged hunger strikes several times in protest.
