FDI: Falun Gong Woman Exhibits Torture Injuries, Dies in Masanjia Forced Labor Camp
Police mask cause of death, claiming she "fell in the shower"

NEWS - Aug. 04, 2003 Falun Dafa Information Center [ http://www.faluninfo.net/ ]

In January 2003, the Masanjia Forced Labor Camp officially changed its name to the "Ideology Education School." It continues to be one of the worst examples of torture and atrocious conditions in China's forced labor camp system.

NEW YORK (FDI) -- Ms. Zhang Guizhi, 47, was a resident of Liujiawopu Village, Xinmin Town, Taihe District, Jinzhou City, Liaoning Province.

In August 2001 police kidnapped Ms. Zhang because she is a Falun Gong practitioner and took her to the Xiaolingzi Airport Police Station. Within two months, she was illegally sentenced to 2 years of forced labor in Masanjia Labor Camp for her Falun Gong practice.

On April 12th, 2003 Ms. Zhang's family received a notice issued jointly by the Masanjia Labor Camp, the local police station and Liujiawopu Village Committee stating that Ms. Zhang "is receiving emergency treatment because she's critically ill."

By the time Ms. Zhang's family arrived at Masanjia, she was already dead.

Family members say there were noticeable wounds on her body, including numerous bruises as well as bloodstains in her nose and mouth.

Labor camp officials refused to allow the family to take any photographs of the body.

Initially, police and camp officials declined to answer questions about the cause of her death. When Ms. Zhang's family members demanded to know why her body was black and blue, the police claimed that she had fallen in the shower, triggering a heart problem that led to her death.

According to a source familiar with Masanjia Labor Camp, prisoners are only allowed to take showers on specific days. April 12th was not a designated "shower day" for those held in the camp, the source says.

Background

Falun Gong, also known as Falun Dafa (about), is a practice of meditation and exercises with teachings based on the universal principle of "Truthfulness-Compassion-Tolerance." It is a practice that was taught in private for thousands of years before being made public in 1992 by Mr. Li Hongzhi. Falun Gong has roots in traditional Chinese culture, but it is distinct and separate from other practices such as the religions of Buddhism and Taoism. Since its introduction in 1992, it quickly spread by word of mouth throughout China, and is now practiced in over 50 countries.

With government estimates of as many as 100 million practicing Falun Gong, China's President Jiang Zemin outlawed the peaceful practice in July 1999 (report), fearful of anything touching the hearts and minds of more citizens than the Communist Party. Unable to crush the spirit of millions who had experienced improved health and positive life changes from Falun Gong, Jiang's regime has intensified its propaganda campaign to turn public opinion against the practice while quietly imprisoning, torturing and even murdering those who practice it.

The Falun Dafa Information Center has verified details of 764 deaths (reports / sources) since the persecution of Falun Gong in China began in 1999. Government officials inside China, however, report that the actual death toll is well over 1,600, while expert sources estimate that figure to be much higher. Hundreds of thousands have been detained, with more than 100,000 being sentenced to forced labor camps, typically without trial.
