Ms. Tang Jinmei, 71 years old, was a practitioner from Shatianli of Zhangshu City. In 2001, she was detained in a brainwashing center in Zhangshu City for more than three months. During the detention period, Ms. Tang was forced to do military drills and tortured to the point where she vomited lots of blood. The brainwashing center realized that she was on the verge of death. Fearing to take any responsibility, the center sent her home. Sometime between February and March, not long after being sent home from the brainwashing center, Ms. Tang passed away.

In November 1999, Ms. Tang had appealed for Falun Gong in Beijing. For that, she was detained at Zhangshu City Detention Center for over seven months. The policeman interrogating her said to her, "If you give up practicing Falun Gong, we will release you." Ms. Tang told him that she would keep practicing. The police threatened her, saying that she would die in jail. Ms. Tang was a very determined practitioner. After being extorted of 3,000 Yuan [500 Yuan is the average monthly income for an urban worker in China.] as bail, she was released. Nobody knew then that she would be killed as a result of torture she suffered in the brainwashing center.
