Persecution Cases of Falun Gong Practitioners in Shiyan City, Hubei Province

1. At the end of April 2002, Practitioner Mr. Liu Hongquan (an employee of the Eastern Automobile Company who has been illegally jailed in the Shayang Forced Labor Camp for a year) was arrested by local policemen and brought to the First Rest House. The exact location is unclear because the policemen covered the practitioners' heads. This is a secret place that policemen of Shiyan City use to torture and interrogate their victims and force them into making confessions. The police tortured Mr. Liu and other practitioners at this location by handcuffing them in the excruciating "Carrying a Sword on the Back" torture. They tied the practitioner's hands behind their backs with one hand over the shoulder and the other hand against the lower back. The police then applied a great deal of force to pull the two hands together and handcuffed them with the smallest copper handcuffs. Then the police stuffed soda cans and bricks underneath their handcuffed arms to cause maximum pain from the pressure. After suffering this torture practitioners were not able to lift their arms for at least a couple days. In some severe cases, practitioners would lose all feeling in their arms for months afterwards. In even worse cases, practitioners' arms were fractured and ligaments torn. Although he was tortured in such a cruel manner, Mr. Liu refused to cooperate with any request or order by the police.'

A few days later Mr. Liu was sent to a detention center. In December 2002, while Mr. Liu was practicing Falun Gong exercises in the detention center, a policeman (his last name is Guan) ordered criminals to put the heaviest shackles on him and lock him in the guardhouse. The guardhouse is a very small room. There are two pots inside, one for urine and one for excrement. The barrels had been in there for a long time and had not been cleaned. Mr. Liu was forced to stay in the guardhouse for all his meals and he had to sleep on a clammy makeshift bed on the ground.

In January 2003, Mr. Liu started a hunger strike to protest the persecution. The policemen ordered the regular criminals to force feed him for several days in a row. They used a screwdriver to pry open his teeth. They didn't feed him anything even though they broke one of his teeth and his mouth was filled with blood. Due to his long-lasting hunger strike, Mr. Liu became very weak and skinny. It was very hard for him to stand up or walk. He was in danger of losing his life at anytime. Finally the policemen had to send him to a near-by hospital. A few days later, the police claimed that Mr. Liu had escaped from the hospital. In fact nobody knows his whereabouts. It is unknown whether he is dead or alive.

2. Ms. Jiang Yun, a practitioner of Shiyan City, was a teacher of The Third Elementary School of Shiyan City. She was abducted and brought to The First Detention Center of Shiyan City between April and May 2002. She went on a long-lasting hunger strike and was cruelly force fed by policemen. Every time she was force fed, her cries brought tears to those who could hear them. Later Ms. Jiang was illegally sent to a forced labor camp. During the journey to the Shayang Forced Labor Camp, she broke free from the persecution with strong righteous thoughts. However, once she returned to her home, she was brought to the police station by her family members who didn't know the truth about the persecution. She was then sent to the First Detention Center of Shiyan City. This time police tortured Ms. Jiang even more cruelly. The policewoman Li Peihua handcuffed Ms. Jiang with a customized torture device (both arms were handcuffed with two small iron rings connected with a screw and a nut. In this way both arms could not move) and put the heaviest shackles on her. Li Peihua even planned to detain Ms. Jiang in the guardhouse. However she could not follow through with her plan due to the guardhouse already being occupied. Then she found any pretext to beat and kick Ms. Jiang. To protest the torture Ms. Jiang went on a hunger strike. Li Peihua ordered a few male criminals to force feed Ms. Jiang. She even stomped on and kicked Ms. Jiang's stomach with her sharp high heel. Li Peifua continued torturing Ms. Jiang until she was sent to the forced labor camp.

3. Ms. Wei Chen, a practitioner of Shiyan City, was a lecturer of the Xunyang Medical Institute of Shiyan. She was arrested and taken to the detention center in July 2002. During a hunger strike, policewoman Li Peihua brought a few male criminals to prison number 43 where Ms. Wei Chen was being detained, and ordered them to force feed her. Li Peihua even shamelessly told the male criminals: "This is the most beautiful lady here. It is your lucky day that I ask you to feed her. You should feed her well."

Ms. Wei Chen refused to wear the prisoner's uniform' and continued practicing the Falun Gong exercises in the detention center. Liu Hong, the manager of the detention center, ordered some regular inmates to tie Ms. Wei Chen onto the "Dead Person's Bed" [The four limbs of the practitioner are stretched out and tied onto the four corners of an icy-cold metal bed. The practitioner cannot move at all. Neither are they allowed to get up to eat, drink, or go to the bathroom. This treatment can last from several hours to more than a dozen days. This type of cruel torture causes severe damage to the practitioner both mentally and physically.]. Ms. Wei's wrists were tied so tight that one wrist was broken. There is a deep scar remaining on it. They didn't release Ms. Wei from the "Dead Person's Bed" until June 2003 when they sent her to the Wuhan Prison.

To all the practitioners in Shiyan City : please help collect and expose detailed information about the crimes committed by policemen of the First Detention Center of Shiyan City and pass it to overseas practitioners.
