Charles Li Still Detained after One Year: Abuse of U.S. Citizen Demonstrates the Jiang Group's Atrocities in Nanjing Prison By Clearwisdom reporter Ren Jian (Clearwisdom.net) It has been a whole year since U.S. citizen, Falun
Gong practitioner Dr. Charles Li was arrested at the Baiyun Airport in Guangzhou
City on January 22, 2003. January 22 (Chinese lunar calendar) is Charles Li's
birthday. American people and overseas Falun Gong practitioners have been paying
close attention to the illegal detention of Charles Li. The numerous physical
and mental atrocities the authorities of Nanjing Prison have subjected Charles
Li to have allowed the world to see the true face of the Chinese judicial system
in carrying out Jiang's policies of eradicating Falun Gong. People also learned
of the extent of the evil persecution in Mainland China. On December 17, 2003, a U.S. consul in Shanghai visited Charles Li at Nanjing
Prison and protested the prison authorities' allowing inmates to attack and rob
Charles Li to uphold so-called prison rules. The prison authorities admitted
that they didn't allow Charles Li to read Falun Gong books. They had taken away
his hand-written materials and destroyed them, and inmates held in the same cell
as Charles Li beat him because he refused to attend brainwashing sessions. The U.S. consul said the prison authorities forced Charles to view propaganda
that defamed Falun Dafa on CCTV, and forced him to do manual labor recently. Observers think the incarceration of U.S. citizen Charles Li has a hidden
motive. Jiang's group wants to retaliate against Falun Gong practitioners in the
U.S. because they filed a lawsuit against Jiang in an Illinois District Court.
Since the followers of Jiang have a guilty conscience, Jiang's group dares not
to let people know their true motive, but claim Charles Li was arrested because
he tried to tap into a cable TV system, not because he is a Falun Gong
practitioner. They didn't mention Falun Gong in order to avoid attracting
criticism from international community. The truth is, they are afraid of Falun
Gong. They dare not allow Charles Li to do the Falun Gong exercises or read
Falun Gong books in prison, and didn't allow him to speak for himself in court.
They even shamelessly asked the U.S. consul to tell Charles Li to give up his
belief. Aren't they vainly trying to cover up facts that are so obvious? Perhaps those people who don't have a spiritual belief system, who would do
anything for tiny profits, don't understand the true meaning of faith. However,
in the Western world, freedom of belief is the most essential part of human
life, and deprivation of freedom of belief is regarded as the most inhuman form
of persecution. Jiang's group is most afraid that the outside world might learn
the truth about the sinister, cruel persecution of Falun Gong. In the past few
years, Jiang's group has strictly blocked information, has terrorized the
Chinese people inside China, and has spread countless lies to the outside world
in order to create a false image of improved human rights conditions in China.
Not many Americans were previously aware of Jiang group's base nature. But now
the public knows that during the past year, these people following Jiang's
orders have beaten a U.S. citizen, force-fed him, tied him to a bed, tortured
him for very long periods of time and forced him to attend brainwashing sessions
to make him give up his belief. If this happened to an American citizen, then we
can only imagine how vicious they are toward the Chinese nationals living under
their power. Aren't they exposing their own crimes? Jiang's group thought if they have the judges and lawyers put on a show and
sentence a Falun Gong practitioner to prison, they could legalize the whole
trial, but in fact their desecration of the legal system and their severe
corruption of the judicial system have attracted public attention. People are
thinking, "Jiang is the one that should be tried." Right now, people
in the world know that Jiang's persecution of Falun Gong has forced tens of
thousands of Falun Gong practitioners into homelessness and broken up their
families. In Australia, the U.S., Germany, Switzerland, Taiwan, Korea and
several other countries, many Falun Gong practitioners and international human
rights groups have charged Jiang with genocide, torture and crimes against
humanity. The overseas media has paid close attention to Charles Li's case. In
addition, new developments in breaking through the Internet blockade has allowed
some people in China to learn of the overseas lawsuits against Jiang. Charles Li, although illegally tried, was not given a chance to speak in
court. He wrote a 95-page manuscript in prison in which he defended his
innocence. Charles analyzed the necessity and rationality behind tapping into
the TV system in China, and about his illegal arrest, and he wrote a detailed
account of the mistreatment he suffered while in detention. According to Charles
Li's fianc¨¦, Fu Yong-ching, he plans to press charges of misconduct against
five judicial workers, including Zhang Jinghong and Huang Shunxiang, who
directly mistreated him under this persecution, based on Article 399 of
the Chinese Criminal Code. Jiang's group thought that by accusing Charles Li of trying to tap into the
TV system they could shift the focus for the international media and avoid
becoming the target of criticism. But unexpectedly, when faced with this inhuman
persecution, other than admiring Falun Gong practitioners' courage for risking
their lives to tap into the TV system, people in China also began paying more
attention to the content of the videos aired by Falun Gong practitioners. They
began to understand the necessity and legitimacy of tapping into the TV system.
The exposure of the truth about the Tiananmen Self-immolation Incident allowed
more people to learn about the deeper atrocities of the persecution, to learn
that Jiang's group had manipulated and is manipulating broadcast stations, TV
stations and newspapers, paid for with taxpayers' money, to frame and deceive
the people. The more people see through the Jiang group's propaganda and lies,
the more people admire and support actions that restore the people's right to
know. Isn't Jiang slapping himself in the face? We can say that each day that Charles Li is persecuted in Nanjing Prison is
another day that Jiang's group exposes its base nature to the world. Right now,
as mentioned above, the prison authorities are forcing Charles Li to view CCTV
propaganda. What are they trying to say, other than to remind the world that
CCTV is the Party's mouthpiece in twisting the truth, inciting hatred and
cooking up lies? From the Criminal Law of the People's Republic of China (1997): Article 399: Any judicial officer who, bending the law for selfish ends or
twisting the law for a favor, subjects to investigation for criminal
responsibility a person he knows to be innocent or intentionally protects from
investigation for criminal responsibility a person he knows to be guilty or,
intentionally running counter to the facts and law, twists the law when
rendering judgments or orders in criminal proceedings shall be sentenced to
fixed-term imprisonment of not more than five years or criminal detention; if
the circumstances are serious, he shall be sentenced to fixed-term imprisonment
of not less than five years but not more than 10 years; if the circumstances are
especially serious, he shall be sentenced to fixed-term imprisonment of not less
than 10 years. Posting date: 1/27/2004 |
