Seventy-Year-Old Retired Cadre from the Cultural Relic Administration Bureau Passes Away Due to Long-Term Torture

(Clearwisdom.net) Ms. Liao Yonghui was a 70-year-old retired cadre from the Cultural Relic Administration Bureau in Sichuan Province. She held the title of "National Excellent Worker." She used to suffer from thyroid gland cancer and had two operations to remove her thyroid gland. In addition, she also had a surgery to remove her womb. Moreover, she was plagued by high blood pressure and heart disease. However, after she took up the practice of Falun Gong, all her diseases went away and she was able to manage heavy housework.

In early 2002, Ms. Liao was arrested and detained for 15 days because she passed out Falun Gong truth-clarification materials. After she was released from the detention center, she was directly sent to the so-called "public security study class" in Wuhou District, Chengdu City. The class was, in fact, a brainwashing class.

While in detention, Liao was monitored around the clock. She was not allowed to study the books of Falun Dafa or do the Falun Gong exercises. Every month she was forced to turn in 300 yuan in the name of so-called "food expenses," another 300 yuan in the name of an "administration fee" and "utility fee." Moreover, she had to pay 900 yuan to cover the so-called "room and board" for those who monitored her. With a small pension of 800 yuan per month, Liao was under tremendous financial burden.

Ten months' torment at the brainwashing class caused Liao's heart disease to recur, but she was still not released. Later, the Jinhua Hospital told the staff at the brainwashing class that she could die if not sent to the hospital. Only then did they send her to the Second People's Hospital in Wuhou District. While in the hospital, she was still watched by guards, who would report to the brainwashing class about her situation. After she recovered a bit, she was not allowed to check out of the hospital. Because she couldn't afford to pay the so-called fees, she was finally allowed to return home, but she was not allowed to go out.

Ms. Liao never recovered from the long-term torture she suffered in the brainwashing class. She passed away in the summer of 2003.
