Latest News Regarding the Persecution of Falun Gong Practitioners in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region (XUAR)

Ms. Zhao Yueming was born in 1965, and works at the Xinjiang Agricultural University. Police officers arrested her in 2001 when she clarified the truth about Falun Gong and the persecution, and unlawfully sentenced her to three years of forced labor. She remained at the forced labor camp until June 10, 2002, when she was released on bail for medical care because the high blood pressure and heart disease that she had suffered from formerly returned after not being allowed to practice the Falun Gong exercises.

The authorities in the Xinjiang UAR have conducted many sessions for "Brainwashing Falun Gong practitioners" this year. Ms. Zhao Yueming left home twice and went into hiding to avoid the brainwashing. However, around September 5, 2004 she was once again forced into a brainwashing class set up by her work unit. Zhao Yueming is now on a hunger strike to protest the illegal persecution.

The Gerontology Rehabilitation Center in Urumqi City, which is located in the backyard of the Hygienic Hospital in Banfanggou Township, Urumqi City, is the central base for the brainwashing classes conducted in Xinjiang. Many brainwashing classes are held there each year. Quite a few Dafa practitioners from the XUAR were detained there for persecution.

Head of the "610 Office" Luo Gan came to the Xinjiang Autonomous Region (XUAR) between August 27 and 31, 2004. He secretly instructed personnel to have practitioners in Xinjiang "go through it again," and intensified the persecution against them. Right afterward, another round of a brainwashing took place in Urumqi, from September 5 to 15. Some of the practitioners were detained there to be subjected to repeated persecution.

On September 12, 2004, in Changji, Xinjiang, the authorities commenced another brainwashing class. It is known that three practitioners, Ms. Wang Xiuzhen, Ms. Li Guiying, and one other practitioner were arrested and persecuted.

Mr. Chen Yujiang, a Falun Gong practitioner from Xinjiang, was discovered by a security guard of a residential community while he was posting, "Falun Dafa is Good" around Lihua Street in the Shuimogou District, Urumqi City. In the evening of March 30 2004, he was taken to the Political and Security Team of the Shuimogou District and then illegally held in the Liudaowan Detention Center. Chen Yujiang has been incarcerated, and subjected to forced labor for three years since 1999, but remains steadfast in his belief in Falun Gong. During those years he was beaten many times by the guards in the Changji Forced Labor Camp because he persists in practicing Falun Gong. In 2003, the persecutors wounded his head severely. He was sent to a hospital for emergency care. Upon intense protest from his family members, and out of fear of having to take responsibility for his condition, the labor camp authorities let his family take Mr. Chen home.

We have recently heard that Chen Yujiang was unlawfully sentenced to five years in prison. He is appealing the sentence.

Police took Falun Gong practitioner Mr. Ma Jijun of Changji from his home on April 4, 2004 and forcibly placed him in a brainwashing class. Due to his firm belief in Falun Dafa, after the brainwashing class he was sent to a psychiatric hospital for further persecution. What happened during that period of time is not clear. In the middle of September, a family member was suddenly ordered to take him back home. His family discovered that he has been severely mistreated. Mr. Ma's once-healthy body was now very swollen and he was close to death, so the family refused to take him home. Nothing has been heard about Mr. Ma Jijun's situation for the past ten days.

Ma Jijun's older sister, Ma Jimei, is presently being unlawfully held in the Second Women's Prison of Xinjiang. Even though the police have exhausted all their tactics with her, she has refused to give up practicing Falun Dafa.

An investigation of the primary responsible guards and police who are persecuting Ma Jijun is in process.
