Shanhaiguan People's Court Is Plotting Another Show Trial Against Wei Danquan and Other Falun Gong Practitioners in Qinhuangdao, Hebei Province
By a Falun Gong practitioner in China
(Clearwisdom.net) Shanhaiguan People's Court in Qinhuangdao City, Hebei
Province, China has issued a legal notice on September 10, 2004 to Mr. Wei
Danquan and some other Falun Gong practitioners in the area, apparently
preparing another show trial against them. On September 7, Wei Danquan, who had
already been subjected to brutal persecution and subsequently become severely
injured, began to cough up blood. He coughed up large quantities of blood
several times, and the hospital diagnosed him with tuberculosis. Mr. Wei and some other practitioners were illegally arrested on April 30,
2004 while sharing important facts about Falun Gong with fellow residents in
Qinhuangdao City. They were then subjected to severe mental and physical
torture. The torture and harsh conditions at the detention facility caused Wei
Danquan's past illness, tuberculosis, to surface again. Wei was released on bail
on June 4 and expected to appear for the scheduled trial. Shanhaiguan People's Court illegally tried Falun Gong practitioner Chen Ying
and some other practitioners on August 24, 2004. The court kept the trial at a
very low profile. So far, the court has not given a verdict. At around 8:00 a.m.
of August 24, four police officers tried to abduct Wei Danquan from his home and
take him to the court. His family feared that the police might refuse to
acknowledge the abduction and Wei's whereabouts later. They demanded that the
police sign a statement acknowledging their arrest and guarantee that they would
bring Wei Danquan back in good health or face legal consequences for their
actions. When confronted with this, the four police officers fled Wei's home.
Wei's family followed the police downstairs and told them the facts about the
persecution against Falun Gong practitioners. Soon, dozens of people gathered
around them and listened to the facts about the persecution. The police then
left the neighborhood. Wei Danquan used to be a military officer working at Shanhaiguan Airport. He
was discharged from his duty because he refused to give up practicing Falun
Gong. Since then, he has been unemployed. He and his family have been struggling
for the past few years, relying on the meager income of his wife working as a
part-time laborer. Wei's daughter is attending elementary school. Wei Danquan's family went to various local government offices in Shanhaiguan
to challenge the severe persecution against Wei Danquan, but the different
offices kept pushing the responsibilities to each other. The local government offices in Shanhaiguan, Qinhuangdao involved in the
