Falun Gong practitioner Tang Jian was tortured to death. He died on July 7, 2004. His body was covered with scars at the time of his death.

Tang Chengyu, the deceased practitioner's son, is now living with his paternal grandparents, both 70 years of age. Tang Chengyu's mother Zhou Wei is 36 years old and unemployed. In 2000, Tang Chengyu was taken to a brainwashing class along with his father Tang Jian. Tang Chengyu's grandfather is a law professor at Nankai University and is providing for both Tang Chengyu and another one of his grandsons.

Practitioner Mr. Tang Jian graduated from the Physics Department, Nankai University and worked at Jialingdao Middle School in the Nankai District. At a school meeting in July 2000, a man attacked Falun Gong, and Tang Jian stepped forward and defended Falun Gong. The perpetrators dragged him out of the meeting and sent him to the Jialingdao Police Station. He was illegally sentenced to one year at the Shuangkou Forced Labor Camp in Tianjin City. His sentence was later extended by one year. He was released in July 2002 in a wretched state as a result of being tortured, but he persisted in his Falun Gong practice. In September 2002, he was arrested again and sent back to the Shuangkou Forced Labor Camp. The guards tortured him even more severely in an attempt to make him give up his belief. He died at the labor camp on July 7, 2004.
