By a practitioner from Xinjiang Province

Mr. Ma Jujun was about forty years old. He was the assistant practitioner at the Falun Gong practice site in Changji City, Xinjiang Province. On March 4, 2004, the local "610 Office" abducted him and illegally took him to a local brainwashing center. Later they sent him to a mental hospital, where they continued to persecute him. On September 27, Ma Jujun died.

Ms. Ma Jimei, Ma Jijun's sister, is currently being detained at the Xinjiang No. 2 Prison, also called the Women's Prison. The guards in the prison have been abusing her.

Ma Jujun was a determined Falun Gong practitioner. He was sentenced to two years of imprisonment in October 1999. He was detained at the Wujiaqu Forced Labor Camp in Changji. Zhang Yan, Gu Jianhai, Ning Tao, and some other guards at the forced labor camp repeatedly shocked him with high-voltage electric batons. Ma Jujun went on a hunger strike and continued to practice Falun Gong, so the guards handcuffed him to his bed for four months. His term of imprisonment was extended for another eight months. Ma Jujun was released in May 2002. After that, he was abducted twice to attend brainwashing classes.

On March 4, 2004, the local "610 Office" abducted Ma Jujun and took him to a brainwashing center at the Nanshan Banfanggou Village Autonomous Region. At the end of the forced brainwashing, he was sent to the No. 4 Hospital at Urumqi City, which is actually a mental hospital, for continued persecution.

In the middle of September, the hospital unexpectedly called his family and asked them to pick up Ma Jijun. When his family saw him, they found that Ma Jujun had serious edema all over his body and that he was extremely weak. His family refused to take him home, requesting instead that the local "610 Office" send Ma Jujun to a hospital for proper care. The family didn't get a response.

Later we learned that Ma Jujun died as a result of the persecution on September 27, 2004. His mother is in her eighties, his wife has no job, and they have no source of income His son is a student in the fifth grade at the No. 3 Primary School in Changji City.

It was reported that Luo Gan, a member of the standing Politburo Committee of the Central Government, went to Xinjiang Province from August 27 to 31, 2004. He ordered all of the Falun Gong practitioners in Xinjiang Province to be "reexamined," and as a result the persecution there escalated. The local "610 Office" held brainwashing classes in Urumqi City from September 5 to 15. Many practitioners were arrested and sent to those classes.
