Falun Gong Practitioner Mei Jianqi of Shanghai is Sentenced to Seven Years in Prison (Photo)

(Clearwisdom.net) Mr. Mei Jianqi, in his late twenties, is from Jiangyin City, Jiangsu Province. In 1996 he entered Shanghai Jiao Tong University as a student in the School of Mechanical Engineering. University authorities expelled him from school in October 1999 when he was a senior. The reason given was that he went to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong and was then not willing to write the "Guarantee Statement" to give up the practice after the University authorities let him back in school. They considered him one of the "steadfast practitioners." He went to Shanghai at the end of August 2000 to request re-admittance to school. He was again required to write the "Guarantee Statement" to give up his cultivation practice first. He knew that he wasn't doing anything wrong by following the principle of "Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance," so he refused to write the statement. Again the school refused to re-admit him.

At the end of October 2000, personnel from the community allied security team reported Mei Jianqi while he was distributing Falun Gong truth clarification materials in the Xuhui District of Shanghai. He was arrested.

Mei Jianqi was held for about 10 days in the Kangjian Police Station. He was not allowed to sleep and was tied to a chair for a long time. After enduring brutal torture as authorities attempted to extract a "confession," Mei Jianqi was transferred to the Longhua Detention Center in Shanghai. From there he was eventually sent to Dafeng Forced Labor Camp in Jiangsu Province for two years of forced labor, without due process or proper sentencing. Mei Jianqi has not been released from the forced labor camp due to his faith. This year, information has come to light that Mei Jianqi was sentenced to seven years in prison.

Here I call upon all the alumni of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, both in China and abroad, and all our friends from education circles and all others who uphold justice to work together to help rescue Mei Jianqi and to work hard to stop the persecution of Falun Gong in China.
