My name is Teng Guilan and I am 79 years old.

I have six sons. Sun Qian is the youngest. He is thirty-six years old. Because of his belief in Falun Gong, he was arrested and detained at the Dehui City Detention Center in Jilin Province. By January of 2003, he had been detained beyond his original term by over fifteen months. On December 18, 2003, the Dehui City Court opened a trial against thirteen Falun Gong practitioners including Sun Qian. My family wanted to see him, but the court only allowed one person to attend [the hearing]. Others could only wait outside hoping to catch a glimpse of him. On that day he was sentenced to 12 years in prison.

Soon after I heard this news, I learned that my fifth son, Sun Ke, was abducted for visiting his younger brother Sun Qian. I was traumatized. I have been missing my innocent sons every moment for the past year. However, there was nothing I could do. Facing the unfair treatment, I can only continue to bear it. I can endure life's hardships, but I cannot tolerate this injustice. Here, I only want to state the truth, hoping you will do what is right and release my sons.

On December 18, 2003, the Dehui City Court opened a trial against thirteen Falun Gong practitioners including my son, Sun Qian. Because they limited the number of people allowed to attend the hearing (only one family member was allowed), my fifth son, Sun Ke, waited at the entrance of the courtroom and requested to attend the hearing. His request was rejected. He then asked them which law they were following that only allows one family member to attend. They could not give an answer. Sun Ke then said: "It is illegal that you have extended the detention of my brother for over fifteen months. It is also illegal that you do not allow family members to attend the hearing. I will go to Beijing to appeal."

After this, the police secretly followed Sun Ke. On his way back, when he was near the Public Security Bureau (about one hundred meters away from the court), a group of police attacked him. They grabbed his hair, kicked him in the lower back, grabbed his arms and forcefully abducted him and took him to the information room of the Public Security Bureau. Eight policemen including Wang Chunsheng, Xiu Chuang and Li Feng ruthlessly struck his face and head and kicked him in the lower back. Xiu Chuang covered his mouth with a coat and shouted hysterically: "I will suffocate you." They beat him up until Sun Ke was severely wounded. In order to further persecute him, the police fabricated a police report to frame him. They accused him of breaking through a security line, blocking a police van and fighting with police. They then forced Sun Ke to sign his name on the fake police report. Sun Ke refused. They said: "No big deal. We can sign it ourselves."

After Sun Ke was sent to a detention center, the police were still not satisfied. They asked other family members of Falun Gong practitioners to be "witnesses" to frame Sun Ke. One male and three female police officers repeatedly threatened a family member saying: "If you do not sign, we will sentence you to prison for the rest of your life." However, the family member nobly refused their demand. Even so, when Sun Ke was about to appeal, they sentenced Sun Ke to one year in the Yinmahe Labor Camp in Jiutai City, Jilin Province.

After arriving at the Yinmahe Labor Camp, Sun Ke was in very poor condition due to the severe beatings, mental pressure and harsh environment. He could not eat or drink, suffered hallucinations and fell unconscious many times. The police put him in solitary confinement and extended his detention for over twenty days. He has been in a state of extreme despair. Sun Ke left behind his unemployed wife and their seven-year-old son. Their life is very difficult.

During the Spring Festival, other families all happily gather together, while my family is lonely and quiet. I am close to eighty years old. Every day I can only sit next to the window hoping one day my sons will come back home. My heart pains whenever I think of my sons who are suffering torture.

I have two grandsons; one is seven and another is six. The little one asked the older one: "It is Spring Festival. Why didn't my father come back?" The older one said: "My father is a good person, but he was sent to a labor camp." The little one said: "Mine too." Why is it so difficult to be a good person nowadays?

My generation has endured too much hardship and has formed a personality of bearing and of tolerating difficulties. Nonetheless, I firmly believe that good will be repaid with good and evil will be met with karmic retribution. Those unlawful thugs have power at this moment. However, history will see justice served. The criminals who persecute my sons will receive the punishment they deserve.
