Qinghua University Doctoral Student Xu Zhiguang Released Due to His Critical Physical Condition Caused by Two-Years of Detention Under Severe Conditions
(Clearwisdom.net) Xu Zhiguang was a graduate student of the 1999 class, studying to receive his
doctorate degree in the Department of Precision Instruments and Machinery in
Qinghua University. He was the winner of top scholarships and was once the
chairman of the Student Association of Science and Technology. Having graduated
from his undergraduate courses, he was exempted from examination and proceeded
to specialize as a doctoral student. On July 25, 1999, Xu Zhiguang was unreasonably detained for one day by the
Beijing City Public Security Department when he went to appeal and explain facts
about Falun Gong. In October 1999, he was sent home for six weeks for being
steadfast in his belief in Falun Gong. He was instructed that he could not
return to his university unless he was willing to abandon his belief in Falun
Gong. In June 2000, he was informed that he was to be immediately suspended or
expelled from the university if he made any further attempt to appeal for
justice for Falun Gong. In April 2001, the university officials sent him to a
brainwashing center against his will, and subsequently expelled him from the
university. He lost his state housing and became homeless. In April 2002, Xu Zhiguang was arrested in an internet cafe and sent to a
brainwashing center known as the " Training Center of Law of Beijing," where he
was detained for 6 months. After that, he was sent to the Tuanhe Labor Camp in
Beijing for forced brainwashing. He had been detained in many places before he
was finally sent to the Detention Center of Haidian District Branch Police
Department in Beijing. Around May 2003, Xu Zhiguang was secretly sentenced to
1.5 years of imprisonment in the Haidian district court. He was continually held
in the Haidian District Detention Center after receiving the unlawful sentence.
Not long after that he fell seriously ill and was in critical condition. The
authorities sent him to the hospital for urgent treatment. He was finally
released on January 20, 2004, because of his poor physical condition, as the
authorities did not want to take responsibility should he die while in
detention.
