A Praiseworthy Man Acknowledged by the Media in 2002 for Not Pocketing Lost Money is Cruelly Persecuted for Persistence in His Belief

Mr. Zhang Qi, 36, worked in a commercial bank in Yuzhoul City, Henan Province. He began practicing Falun Gong in 1997. Through practicing Falun Gong he became very healthy and was no longer bothered by various ailments. In June 2000, he was imprisoned in a local detention center for appealing in Beijing. Later he was sent to a brainwashing center where he was further persecuted for his belief. In October 2001, he was again detained for 15 days for clarifying the truth about Falun Gong.

In July 2002, his truth-clarifying activity was again reported and he was forced to leave home to prevent persecution. In November 2002, he was arrested by the police from Dunkeng and was detained in the Yuzhoul City Detention Center. Due to the long-term abuse, his health became very poor and his earlier heart disease and high blood pressure returned. He was sentenced to a four-year prison term even though his body was in an extremely weak condition. He was sent to the Xingmi Jail in December 2003. His health has deteriorated so much in jail that he cannot even get up from bed; in fact, he is on the verge of death.

Mr. Zhang Qi is known to be a very good person. In 2002, he found a large sum of money in front of his work place, in the amount of 8,000 Yuan [the average monthly income of Chinese workers is about 500 Yuan in urban areas and 200 Yuan in rural areas]. Knowing that the owner of the money would be very worried, he searched all over for the owner and finally found him. Out of gratitude, the owner offered him a reward and to entertain him in a restaurant. Mr. Zhang politely refused both offers. He was such an honorable person that a local newspaper reported the episode! Yet, the cruel persecution continues to such an extreme that he is on the verge of death, only because he persists in his belief in "Truthfulness, Compassion, and Tolerance."
