The Persecution of Falun Dafa Practitioners in Yitong County, Jilin Province

(Clearwisdom.net) The Yitong Manchu Autonomous County is only 30 miles from Changchun City, the political center of Jilin Province. Before the persecution began on July 20, 1999, there were over 1,000 people practicing Falun Gong there. Since July 20, 1999, three practitioners from this city have been put in prison, over 150 practitioners have been sent to forced labor camps, two practitioners have been tortured to death, and the overall amount of illegal fines extorted from Falun Gong practitioners has exceeded a million Yuan [Chinese currency; one yuan equals approximately 0.12 USD; 500 yuan is the average monthly income of an urban worker in China]. On December 4, 2003, the police again ransacked the homes of over ten Falun Gong practitioners and confiscated a photocopier then arrested Ms. Chen Jingru, Xu Hongyan, and Chen Yunxia. All of them have gone on hunger strikes in protest. On March 2, 2004, these three practitioners were sent to the Yitong County Court. The Court only allowed one representative from each of their work units to attend the trial. No Falun Dafa practitioners were allowed to sit in the courtroom. There were armed police around the courthouse, and a police car patrolled outside. Some people saw that the practitioners were brought to the courthouse in a police car, and the gate of the courthouse immediately closed after the car entered.

The people who attended the trial saw that the defendants had to be carried into courtroom, because all of them were emaciated and did not have the strength to support their own weight. Their voices were so weak that others could barely hear them. One of them fainted in the courthouse. Someone heard Ms. Chen Jingru shout in a weak voice, "Falun Dafa is great! Restore my Teacher's reputation!" Many people on the scene wept and could not bear to continue watching. Ms. Chen Jingru's lawyer said that a copy machine was insufficient evidence to convict his client of any wrongdoing. Finally, the trial was hastily ended without a clear conclusion. Recently it has been reported that after a secret discussion, the Yitong County Court has sentenced the three practitioners to prison and has reported to the higher authorities. It is clear that the trial was just a show as the sentence was determined extrajudicially.
