Practitioner Mr. Zhang Jianbo on Long-Term Hunger Strike to Protest Illegal Detention in Forced Labor Camp

(Clearwisdom.net) Mr. Zhang Jianbo, thirty years old, is a practitioner from the Xiantao area, Hubei Province. He was a graduate student at the Zhejiang Province Technology University in 1997. In September of 2000, because Mr. Zhang refused to denounce his belief in Falun Gong, he was expelled from school and sentenced to four years in a forced labor camp.

At noon on March 29, 2004, Mr. Zhang was talking to people about Falun Gong in the Heli Village Technology Park area of Yangxunqiao Town, Shaoxing County, Zhejiang Province, when someone reported him to the police and followed him to the Shaoxing County Yongli Thermoelectric Power Plant, where the police arrested him. He went on a hunger strike to protest his detention. He also sang Falun Dafa songs in the labor camp, and many prisoners and even some policemen learned the songs from him. On April 29, he was sentenced to two years of forced labor. Mr. Zhang did not accept the sentence and refused to sign his name on the sentencing form.

At present Mr. Zhang has been transferred to the Longyou County Shiliping Labor Camp in Zhejiang Province. There are over thirty other male practitioners detained at the labor camp. He has been on a hunger strike for forty-nine days to protest the illegal detention. His life is in great danger, and the authorities have sent him to the hospital for emergency treatment. His family went to visit him, but the authorities blocked their visit.

Mr. Zhang did not accept the sentence and is applying for an administrative appeal. The unit responsible for the administrative appeal is the People's Government Labor Camp Management Committee of Zhejiang Province. The person in charge is Mr. Fu. His office phone number is 86-571-87286582.
