Some Experiences Gained from Rescuing My Wife, Zhang Lihong

I am the husband of Falun Gong practitioner Zhang Lihong. At around 9:00 on the morning of May 20, I learned that over a dozen policemen from the Lufeng National Security Bureau, Team Three of the National Security Brigade, the Chengnan Police Station, the Shanwei City Police Department and the Shenzhen City Police Department had surrounded the residence where my wife lived in Mainland China, and that they planned to arrest her at any time.

I was very upset and thought to myself, "What if they take away my wife? She needs to take care of our two children, as well as her two elderly parents. My mother-in-law has very poor vision and she needs constant care." With these thoughts, my heart was filled with complaints towards those policemen. I acted just like an ordinary person who could not stand the heavy blow of the bad news. I couldn't get to sleep, nor could I calm down to study the Fa (1). I was occupied by my attachment to get my wife out of trouble. For the whole day I was busy searching for the names of telephone numbers of the police, hoping to expose the police's intent to the public. I also informed our local rescue team and asked them to please send forth righteous thoughts. Later that day I learned that my wife had been handcuffed and carried off to a waiting police van at 10:00 on May 20. She was then sent to the Shanwei City Detention Center.

A fellow practitioner noticed my not-so-good state of mind, so she took the initiative to share her understandings with me. She said to me, "You must keep your heart unmoved by your wife's arrest. Rescuing her with human sentimentality is still an ordinary person doing things, no matter how much effort you make. The effect may not be so good. The evil could arrest your wife, which suggests that your wife still has loopholes. If you do not look inside and find the loopholes, how can you rescue her? Only by following Teacher's teachings can the things you do be the most righteous. With Teacher and numerous Fa-safeguarding gods, the evil is not allowed to persecute your wife if you do everything right." Her words reminded me to calm down and study the Fa. Only by doing things from the perspective of the Fa, can our actions have the greatest effect.

Jiang's regime pressures the police to do evil things. Our sending forth righteous thoughts and clarifying the truth can help the police understand the truth and stop doing evil. As for myself, getting rid of my attachment to fear was something I tried to do when making phone calls to the police in China to clarify the truth. I also realized that I needed to cultivate compassion. When I first called the police, I was often overcome with emotion. Gradually I was able to focus my mind on saving the police and I truly hoped they could learn the truth and stop doing evil. With my righteous thoughts, I was able to tell the police more facts of the persecution besides the arrest of my wife. I asked them why they arrested my wife and they replied that it is because she practiced Falun Gong. Then I told them that Falun Gong is legal in Hong Kong and other places around the world. I also told them that the Chinese Constitution bestows each citizen with the right of freedom of belief, and that Jiang is not representing the country, and he is instead abusing his power and doing bad things. I made sure I told every policeman that anyone with a bit of conscience would not persecute my wife, a kind woman who was needed to look after two kids and two elderly people at home. I also told them that the whole world has seen the evil nature of Jiang's regime.

In my mind, I had the thought that I must get my wife out of police custody and I must not acknowledge the persecution of my wife. As long as the evil still detained my wife, I would expose such persecution to the China liaison authorities, the embassies in Hong Kong, the media, human rights organizations, social groups and to the Hong Kong citizens. On May 22, I asked for two weeks' leave from my company. I also told the police responsible for my wife's arrest that I would expose their evil deeds to the whole world. It turned out that my wife was released even before I went further to expose the persecution. I knew that our righteous thoughts had frightened the evil.

Thanks to reminders from fellow practitioners, I realized that our children also had the responsibility of validating Dafa and saving their mom. Therefore I asked my relatives in China to take our kids to the police department every day to ask for my wife's release. My children's innocence and their call for their mom's release was a sharp contrast to the inhuman nature of Jiang's regime's persecution of Falun Gong practitioners.

On May 20, as soon as my wife was taken to the Shanwei Detention Center, she went on a hunger strike to protest the unlawful arrest. On May 21, she was sent to Lufeng City. At noon on May 22, the police ordered my father-in-law to go to the detention center to persuade my wife to take in food. My wife still insisted on not eating or drinking. My father-in-law said to the police before he left, "If Zhang Lihong dies, you ought to be held accountable." Shortly after he went home, he received another notice from the police, who told him that my wife could now go home on bail and await trial.

When my father-in-law came to process my wife's release documents, the police asked my wife to sign her name on the documents. Because she still had some attachments, she signed her name. After she went home, she realized she had done wrong. As she had committed no crime, why should she be awaiting trial? She regretted her behavior very much, and later declared void her signature on such documents.

Today is May 24. My father-in-law went to see a policeman in charge of my wife's matter. The policeman told my father-in-law that they had received a lot of pressure from Shanwei City and Guangdong Province, and they would come get my wife on May 25. This meant that my wife could be abducted any time. With the consent of my in-laws, my wife decided to leave her residence together with our two kids. At present, I do not know where she is.
