Cases of Persecution Suffered by Teachers and Students of Ocean University, Zhanjiang City

(Clearwisdom.Net) Zhanjiang City Ocean University is located in Zhanjiang City, Guangdong Province. Since Jiang's Regime started to persecute Falun Gong in 1999, certain people in Zhanjiang Ocean University collaborated with officials from the "610 Office" (1) the National Security Office, as well as the "610 Office of Education," and the police to implement the brutal persecution against Falun Gong practitioners. The former Secretary of the University's [Ruling Party] Committee, Chen Nianqiang (who is currently the Secretary of the [Ruling Party] Committee at the Guangdong Province University for Industry), often slanders and attacks Falun Dafa; he has also denounced steadfast Falun Gong practitioners in many places. Additionally, officials from Zhanjiang Ocean University have organized teachers and students to carry out campaign called "A Million Signatures" designed to incite hatred against Falun Gong by publically signing banners with Anti-Falun Gong propaganda slogans. The Secretary of the [Ruling Party] Committee at the College for Navigation of Zhanjiang Ocean University (formerly the Secretary of the [Ruling Party] Committee at the College for Agriculture) forced eleven students who are Falun Gong practitioners to submit to brainwashing session or face expulsion if they would not stop practicing Falun Gong. We will now summarize some of the cases of Falun Dafa practitioners who were abused at Zhanjiang Ocean University.

Dr. Tang Xuejun, who is in his thirties, traveled to Beijing to appeal for the rights of Falun Gong in July 2000. He was illegally detained in Beijing and in Zhanjiang Detention Center, where he suffered brutal beatings at the hands of police and other prisoners. Zhanjiang Ocean University illegally further punished him by not promoting him and deducting money from his salary and bonus. He did not receive a general salary increase. In total, the university has withheld 30,000 yuan RMB from him. Although he suffered from the persecution, Dr. Tang was still doing very well in his scientific research, which had a significant impact nationwide. He took the lead in multiple scientific projects, one of which was the Guangdong Province Natural Science Funding Community project. Despite his successes, Zhanjiang Ocean University did not permit Dr. Tang to have normal working conditions or environment. Dr. Tang was illegally detained at the airport when he went on a business trip. In September 2003, officials from the "610 Office" forced him to leave home. Others took over his scientific projects, and after a while Zhanjiang Ocean University even began fabricating an excuse to expel Dr. Tang.

Ms. Chen Xiuying, who is in her fifties, is a lecturer at the university and went to Beijing to appeal for justice for Falun Gong. Upon her return from Beijing, in October 1999, staff at the Zhanjiang Detention Center illegally detained her and tortured her by placing her in heavy shackles. Zhanjiang Ocean University took away her Party membership, demoted her, reduced her salary and bonus, and excluded her from receiving a general salary increase. The total amount of money the university withheld from her amounts to more than 20,000 Yuan RMBs.

Mr. Chen Xiangqian, who is in his twenties, is a student at the College of Agriculture at Zhanjiang Ocean University. After he returned from an appeal [for Falun Gong] in Beijing in December 1999, he was detained at Zhanjiang Detention Center. On January 14, 2001, staff from Zhanjiang Ocean University and the Maoming City Police Station was sent to Maoming City. They went to Chen's home to continue to abuse and brainwash him. Chen Xiangqian was forced to leave home. On March 4th of the same year, officers of the Maoming City Police Station illegally arrested Chen Xiangqian when he was producing publications explaining the true nature of Falun Gong. Without any legal procedure, he was illegally sentenced to 13 years of jail and was expelled from Zhanjiang Ocean University.

Mr. He Gengqing, who is in his twenties, was a student of the College of Agriculture at Zhanjiang Ocean University. When he returned from an appeal in Beijing in November 1999, he was detained at Zhanjiang Detention Center. Zhanjiang Ocean University tried to force him to give up practicing Falun Gong. When he persisted in practicing, he was expelled from Zhanjiang Ocean University in 2001. He had to leave his home, but he still clarified the true facts about Falun Gong to others. He was illegally arrested later. He was sentenced to 11 years of jail by the Maoming City Court.

In January 2002, when seven practitioners, including Chen Xiangqian and He Gengqing, were subjected to a show-trial at the Maoming City Theater, they shouted to the audience: "This is the greatest injustice in thousands of years. We demand the restoration of our Master's reputation and of Falun Dafa's innocence!" The theater was very quiet, and their voices stirred everybody's conscience. All compassionate people in the audience have felt the injustice the authority imposed on the Falun Dafa practitioners.

Mr. Zhong Shumin, who is in his twenties, is a student at the College of Agriculture at Zhanjiang Ocean University. He went to appeal for the rights of Falun Gong in Beijing in November 1999, and was detained at the Zhanjiang Detention Center. Personnel from Zhanjiang Ocean University tried to force him to give up practicing Falun Gong, but he persisted and was expelled from Zhanjiang Ocean University in 2001. He had to leave his home but kept explaining the true nature of Falun Gong to others. Later he was illegally arrested in Guangzhou City and sent to Guangzhou City Forced Labor Camp No. 1 for two years.

Ms. Zhan Meijuan, who is in her twenties, is a student at the College of Industry at Zhanjiang Ocean University. She was detained at Zhanjiang Detention Center after she returned from an appeal in Beijing in December 1999. Personnel from Zhanjiang Ocean University tried to force her to give up practicing Falun Gong and she was expelled, when she wouldn't comply. She was forced to leave her home and her whereabouts are presently unknown.

Ms Hu Zhenfeng, who is in her twenties graduated in July 1999 from Zhanjiang Ocean University. She disappeared after she went to appeal for the rights of Falun Gong in Beijing in October 1999.
