National Security Police Arrest Six Practitioners in Weifang, Shandong Province -- One Now in Critical Condition

National Security police arrested six Dafa practitioners from Weifang City, Shandong Province, on April 24, 2004, who had been forced to leave their homes to avoid further persecution. The authorities isolated and imprisoned them. The latest information indicates that practitioner Ms. Sun Xiaomei has gone on hunger strike and her health is now in critical condition, while practitioner Xiao Yixia has developed seizures. The practitioners are being mistreated and are in very serious condition.

  1. Illegal Arrests

    On the evening of April 24, the authorities in Weifang City, including Wang Zhihua, Associate Party Secretary of the City, Li Shouyu, Secretary of Political and Judiciary Committee, and Jiang Yanlin, National Security Bureau of Weifang City, instructed National Security police officers to arrest the above-mentioned six practitioners. First they arrested practitioner Ms. Xiao Yixia (32 year old artist) from her home. Then they dispatched two dozen officers to the places where the four other practitioners lived. The officers used a master key to break into their homes and arrested the practitioners including Ms. Sun Xiaomei (42 years old, kindergarten teacher), Mr. Yang Guangmao (48 years old, former Accounting Section supervisor in Weifang), Ms. Tang Xiumei (39 years old, from Fangzi District of Weifang City), and Mr. Zhang Liang (30 years old, from Hanting District). During the arrest, they injured Ms. Sun's forehead. At around 11 pm that day, they blocked the road and arrested practitioner Li Jiangang while he was driving a car. Mr. Li is the 32-year-old nephew of practitioner Ms. Chen Zixiu whom the authorities tortured to death and whose death was later reported in detail by the Wall Street Journal. The police also searched three houses, without any warrants, where practitioners stayed.

    After the six practitioners were arrested, the National Security officers quickly interrogated each of them, but none of the practitioners gave them any information. They were then imprisoned separately. Ms. Sun and Ms. Xiao were sent to a notorious brainwashing program at the Industrial Cadres School of Weifang City; Yang Guangmao was sent to the Nugukou Detention Center, Qingdao Railroad Branch Bureau; Li Jiangang was sent to the Detention Center in the Kuiwen District of Weifang City; Tang Xiumei was sent to the Detention Center in the Fangzi District of Weifang; and Zhang Liang was sent to an unknown location (possibly at the Detention Center of Hanting District).

  2. The Authorities Imprisoned Ms. Sun Xiaomei Several Times

    Despite the fact that practitioner Sun Xiaomei was diagnosed as suffering a heart attack after she was arrested, the authorities continued to imprison her and slated her for brainwashing. Led by Fu Jinbin, they continuously subjected her to a brainwashing program. Her former employer even sent two people to accompany her day and night in cooperation with the authorities. To protest, Ms. Sun held a hunger strike, first eating very little, and then refusing to take any food. According to witnesses, Ms. Sun is now critically ill and dying. Afraid of the accountability of her possible death, her former employer asked for her release without bail, but the proposal was turned down by personnel managing the brainwashing center. According to the leaders of her former employer, "The head from Weifang City refused to release her. Now they are in the process of reconsidering whether they will release her."

    In the past few years, Ms. Sun upheld her belief in Falun Gong, and as a result the authorities illegally arrested her several times.

    1. On the morning of July 20, 1999, the officers from the Police Department of Weifang arrested her and imprisoned her for one month. During her imprisonment, both her mother and her younger sister died from torture.
    2. At the end of 1999, the authorities locked her up in a small room in her office building for two months. A witness stated, "I would definitely have a mental breakdown if I were imprisoned under such conditions."
    3. In the summer of 2000, Ms. Sun went to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong. She was locked up in a detention center for seventeen days.
    4. In November of 2000, the authorities arrested her, once again, in her house. They sent her to a detention center for one month.
    5. At the end of 2000, Ms. Sun and her son were forced to leave home to avoid harassment. In April of 2002, the police officers once again arrested her and imprisoned her in the notorious brainwashing center at the Industrial School. The authorities attempted twice to imprison her in a forced labor camp. However, on each occasion, the forced labor camp returned her to the detention center because of her very poor health. Later she became critically ill after she held a hunger strike to protest. The authorities reluctantly released her in fear of her death. Finally on April 24, 2004, the authorities again arrested her.
