Practitioner Zhang Yufang, a Retired Official of the Lingwu Epidemic-Prevention Station, Cruelly Persecuted along with Her Family

(Clearwisdom.net) Zhang Yufang, female, 60, is a retired official of the Lingwu City Epidemic-Prevention Station in Ningxia Province. Because she continued to practice Falun Dafa, on February 21, 2002, she was illegally imprisoned in the Young Women's Labor Camp of Ningxia for two years.

During her term of "re-education through labor," Ms. Zhang was severely tortured, bringing great damage to both her body and spirit. Every day, she was forced to endure over ten hours of highly intensive work, which made her blood pressure gradually increase.

The labor camp brainwashes Dafa practitioners who are illegally imprisoned. The brainwashing is done in three stages: In the first stage, practitioners are totally isolated for up to one month. They are imprisoned in monitored rooms and watched 24 hours a day. They are also forced to read brainwashing material, and make notes about their "understanding" and thoughts on the materials. The second stage is a semi-isolated type, which takes about one month. The guards force practitioners to watch video programs that slander Falun Dafa and write their "understandings" every day. The third stage is the stage of "solidification." They try to force practitioners to write the so-called "three letters (1)"; they threaten practitioners with increased prison terms etc., and force practitioners to report on and expose other practitioners who are determined in practicing Falun Dafa. Under such pressure against her body and spirit, Ms. Zhang's blood pressure elevated to over 200, which finally led her to have a stroke. She had to lie down in bed for five days. She could eat only when other practitioners fed her. She was unable to feed herself. Finally, she was sent to the armed police hospital. She stayed in the hospital for one day and one night, and then she was sent back to the labor camp without receiving any treatment for her condition. The guards tried to force her to criticize Falun Gong and its practitioners, and they insulted Teacher. In addition, she was forced to stand up even though she was deathly sick. When she stood up, she fell down and became unconscious. It was a week before they informed her family members. On April 10, 2003, when she was sent to a hospital, she was in a coma and her appearance had changed beyond recognition. She received treatment in a municipal hospital for a month. Half of her body was paralyzed. The police officers who persecuted her were Zhang Xiaoyan and Ma Li.

Ms. Zhang's husband Xu Yaozhen (A Dafa practitioner) was illegally imprisoned in Baitugang Labor Camp in Ningxia, and her daughter Xu Yan (also a Dafa practitioner) was forced to live in exile to avoid arrest. Later on, when Xu Yan found out that her mother was hospitalized, she came back and took care of her. During this time, Commissar Ma hypocritically went to the hospital, and said solemnly to Ms. Zhang's daughter, "You should not leave. Your mother needs you. Take good care of her." At the time, SARS had begun to run rampant. The hospital could not allow her to stay. Ms. Zhang was asked to leave the hospital, so Xu Yan took care of her disabled mother at home.

On August 23, 2003, several police arrested Xu Yan at her home and sent her to a detention center. She was imprisoned there for over five months. After the 2004 Chinese spring festival, she was illegally sentenced to three years in prison. She is currently imprisoned in the Ningxia Women's Jail.

At present, one side of Ms Zhang's body is still paralyzed and she cannot take care of herself.

(1) The "Three Statements": Created by the "610 Office," they consist of a "Letter of Repentance" stating that one is remorseful for having practiced Falun Gong, a "Guarantee Statement" to never again practice Falun Gong, appeal, or distribute information about Falun Gong, and a "Dissociation Statement" to declare a dissociation with Falun Gong, which includes a list of names and addresses of all family members, friends and acquaintances who are practitioners.
